Possible Echo Fighters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Melee Echo Fighters

by Justin Berube - September 6, 2018, 9:47 am EDT

Echo Fighters for characters first appearing in the original Super Smash Bros. Melee.

14. Dry Bowser

Original Fighter: Bowser

Odds: Medium

Dry Bowser first appeared in New Super Mario Bros. after the Koopa King fell in lava. He was the final boss his first game and has made a few appearances since.

Dry Bowser seems like a perfect fit for a Bowser Echo Fighter, but may wind up just being a Bowser costume. Either way, it would be cool to see this Bowser in Smash Bros. Ultimate.

15. Lolo & Lala

Original Fighter: Ice Climbers

Odds: Low

Lolo & Lala are two characters from the NES era that may be adaptive to the Ice Climbers' moveset. It may, however, be complicated. Would Lolo & Lala swing their fists or keys instead of hammers? I'm not sure, but I bet Sakurai could make it work.

Even if it is possible I don't think it's likely to see these two obscure HAL characters make a return even though it would be extremely cool.

16. Impa

Original Fighter: Sheik

Odds: Medium

As another member of the Sheikah tribe it would make sense that Impa could be a Sheik Echo Fighter.

If Impa does make the cut I'd like to see her Skyward Sword version as each Zelda character seems to be based on a different title from the franchise.

17. Hilda

Original Fighter: Zelda

Odds: Very Low

Hilda is the Princess of Lorule in A Link Between Worlds. Zelda's look already borrows from that game, so it isn't beyond the realm of possibility Hilda could be added from a graphical standpoint.

However, some of Zelda's attacks probably wouldn't make sense on Hilda, and with the low odds of other Lorule characters appearing in Smash, I wouldn't count on seeing Hilda make a Smash debut.

19. Dr. Luigi

Original Fighter: Dr. Mario

Odds: High

Dr. Luigi seems like a no-brainer. Just slap Luigi in a lab coat and make him Dr. Mario's Echo fighter.

Many Luigi purists may be scared that he'd play too much like Mario since Dr. Luigi would be based on Dr. Mario, but fear not. As the Chrom Echo Fighter has shown us Sakurai is open to Echo Fighters taking moves from other characters in the same franchise. So some of Luigi's moves are up for grabs!

22. Ravio

Original Fighter: Young Link

Odds: Very Low

For reason I'm not going to get into, Ravio could work as a Young Link Echo Fighter. But do we really need more versions of Link? Not really.

24. Mega Mewtwo X

Original Fighter: Mewtwo

Odds: Low

Mega Mewtwo X is the Psychic & Fighting version of Mewtwo. As an Echo Fighter I'd imagine it'd hit harder with physical attacks or when closer to the opponent versus the standard Mewtwo.

Mega Mewtwo X would need a new Final Smash though as Mewtwo's currently turns it into Mega Mewtwo Y. Pokémon fans know this wouldn't make sense for Mega Mewtwo X. Ultimately, I think this is what hurts its chances.

I feel like a good 50% - 60% of these ideas could just be implemented as an alternative costume for a character rather than as a standalone separate fighter requiring a roster spot and some unique animations or attacks. In fact, I'd love if they were done as alternative costumes since it would sort of allow those characters to exist and be used for those that want to fight as them.

Hilda’s color palette is most likely already in the game. As a Zelda series character, she was almost an all-time favorite for me. A Link Between Worlds is an excellent game despite the overall trash character design (Hilda interestingly notwithstanding). The setup was perfect for Hilda to be the main antagonist/final boss then Nintendo lost its nerve. Had Nintendo gone through with it (even if she repented), I’d probably put Hilda right up there with Midna. So close.

Really hate everything about Shadow being an Echo fighter for Sonic over Knuckles, Tails, or even Metal Sonic.

Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeee if Jeanne makes it in.

I’d rather see Medusa as an original character with a unique moveset, or even half-unique. I’ll take her as an Echo Fighter regardless. She checks off three boxes for me: villain, female, and classic.

Funky Kong seems like such an obvious Echo Fighter, I’d be kind of shocked if he didn’t make it. Once change: Up Special should be a surfboard move. All taunts should be surfboard related. Radical.

Ken is also an obvious choice though I kind of hope for Akuma instead. He may require too many changes so Ken it is.

I'd replace Blood Falcon with Black Shadow as the Captain Falcon clone.  Like I've said several times before, with Ganondorf now using a sword in his Smash Attacks combined with the other changes he's been given since Brawl, he's pretty far removed from his Melee counterpart.  Black Shadow would make the most sense to give Melee Ganondorf fans that slower more powerful version of Captain Falcon they liked.  Plus it makes more sense because he has a larger more muscular build and in the F-Zero games Black Shadow has one of the slowest but most powerful vehicles as well.

I wished you hadn't mentioned Lolo and Lala! I hadn't thought of them being a fighter and they'd be a great, unusual choice, but I agree that the chances of them being in the roster, even as an echo fighter is vanishingly small. One thing that may up their chances is that Satoru Iwata worked on the series. That might make Sakurai give the characters a bit more consideration than they would get otherwise.

Funky Kong, Hilda, Dr. Luigi, Dixie Kong, Louie/Brittany, Isabelle, Medusa, Ms. Pac-Man, and Ken would be my picks for great Echo Fighters.

I feel like this can be stated about all of the echoes, both current inclusions and wish lists.
