Where Did All the eShop Games Go?

Scram Kitty, Squids Odyssey, and Monkey Pirates

by Neal Ronaghan - April 28, 2014, 10:44 am EDT

Here's another group of Wii U and 3DS eShop games that were delayed but are totally coming soon.

Scram Kitty and His Buddy on Rails

Developer: Dakko Dakko
Platform: Wii U
Previous Release Window: March
Current Release Window: Very Soon

What is it?: The name is a dead giveaway that Scram Kitty and His Buddy on Rails is a weird one. It’s a quirky mixture of shoot-’em-up and platformer with rail-based movement. And like, you control a friend of Scramy Kitty who has to fight mice and mechs in a space station. Or something. It’s weird. Check out our preview for more details.

What is the developer saying?: We didn’t get a reply from Dakko Dakko, but the company did recently tweet out saying that Scram Kitty is just waiting for a release date at this point.

Squids Odyssey

Developer: The Game Bakers
Platform: Wii U/3DS
Previous Release Window: March
Current Release Window: Nothing definite

What is it?: Squids Odyssey is an action RPG where you build up an army of class-based squids to fight in turn-based battles against other evil sea creatures.

What is the developer saying?: “The basic answer is that Squids Odyssey is still going through the submission process and we don't have a definite release date yet.” Emily Morganti, PR

Monkey Pirates

Developer: Henchmen Studio
Platform: Wii U
Previous Release Window: Q1
Current Release Window: May/June

What is it?: Monkey Pirates is a novel attempt at rekindling old-fashioned local multiplayer. It’s not about mini-games; it’s about naval warfare with friends. Check out our preview for more details.

What is the developer saying?: “It is the good old reason, but still very true, of the time needed to have a better experience for the player. We were good to go by the date we announced (April 3) , but we still had some framedrops in the game so we took the decision to delay the game in order to get rid of them and have a nice fluid and polished game. But today we are ready for our final submission, which mean we should be out in a month from now. We’ll communicate as soon as we have a fixed release date.” Christophe Siccardi, Henchmen Studio

We've always had delays with games, but now with the internet and social media and the need for constant info, delays feel like they are so much more painful than ever before.

But Indy devs, as stated, have no clue how long it takes to make a game.

A number of these were on display at GDC, right? So I don't think there is any vaporware.

No, certainly not vaporware. I think the Teslagrad response covers the essence of the problems -- there were unexpected problems with the middleware and/or the devs don't have experience tuning it to work best with Wii U, the last bit of polish always takes longer than you think, and the lot check process takes way longer than indie devs are used to on other platforms. Hopefully, the first and last of those things can be smoothed out by more effort on Nintendo's side. I guess it's just more telling that Nintendo was willing to use these estimates in their press release (because there was nothing else to talk about), despite the long history of launch misses, especially on the Nintendo digital distribution side. On the other hand, the alternative is the case of Block Drop U, the only Nintendo Web Framework game to release within the first year, but in a state that was barely out of prototype stage.

Funny, I just booted up the Indie channel on the eShop last week looking for something to power through while I was sick, and was surprised at the dearth of releases, as I recalled a pretty loaded Spring slate. Luckily Knytt Underground was ready to go, and awesome. (And kind of crazy long.)

When I read the title for this article I thought it was going to say it's been Nintendo's fault. I'm happy to hear that's not the case.

It is ok. I am a Nintendo fan. I am used to waiting a little extra longer to get great games.
