The Wii third-party game with the most cursing might be the best.
Before House of the Dead: Overkill, I could have cared less about the House of the Dead franchise. I enjoyed playing the arcade games over the years, but the experience was never anything memorable. That all changed when I got my first Goregasm in the 2009 Wii release, a game that is the Nintendo World Report staff's top third-party Wii game.
Unlike previous House of the Dead games, Overkill was based off of the grindhouse-style of film recently re-popularized in 2007 by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino in Grindhouse. This fresh take on the series allowed it to have a fairly tongue-in-cheek presentation, with lots of witty interplay between the two main characters, and a clever introduction for every level by a humorous narrator. The story was bizarre and downright disturbing, but it came together in a way that was both ridiculous and mildly engaging. Let's put it this way: the ending of the game will put a smile on your face and also gross you out.
Overkill is made even stronger by its dynamite soundtrack, which features some legitimately good music, and also hides some really ridiculous remixes that feature such winning quotes as "House Of The Dead: Overkill, F***ed up things!" Preceding that in the remix of the song Critic's Choice are quotes that involve a toothless crack whore and a street corner prostitute. This game sure as hell ain't safe for work.
The rail-shooter gunplay in Overkill is great as well, and the levels are highly replayable, especially with a co-op friend. The fact that you can build up your combo meter to an American flag-emblazoned Goregasm level is possibly the greatest thing to happen in video games since Conker's Bad Fur Day featured an opera-singing piece of crap.
Conker's Bad Fur Day is probably the best analog for this game, as House of the Dead: Overkill is a raunchy and rewarding game that makes solid gameplay into something far greater than the sum of its parts by the style and boldness of the presentation. For that, Overkill is our collective preferred third-party Wii game.
Note: I started compiling a list of quotes from the game to put here to highlight how damn funny this game is, but most of the quotes would make my mom blush, so just go play the game again or for the first time instead. It is superb.
