Seriously Nintendo, Still No Word on NFC Features?

Have Nintendo forgotten about this? Never mind, I'll make some guesses anyway...

Ever since the Wii U's NFC (Near Field Communication) function was unveiled in January, I've been tremendously excited at the possibilities of the feature. This is a completely new and unique feature that we haven't seen in things outside of electronic ticket gates and crazy arcade games in Japan.

Eight months and many public events and investor meetings later, we still know absolutely nothing official about how this will be used on Wii U. Weird. The closest thing we've had is a leaked (and completely mocked up) trailer from Ubisoft and a brief mention at an E3 meeting, rather odd if you ask me.

My initial predictions were the obvious ones; much how it's been used in Japan for years inside mobile phones and train passes - paying for smaller purchases. When you apply this to a gaming platform it would mean things like VC games and other smaller downloadable games. Much like what I mentioned on the Famicast, this would be a genius move on Nintendo's behalf, it would make buying eShop games feel like buying candy; quick, easy and moreish. Oh, a new level pack for New Super Mario Bros U? *beep*, bought. Cool a brand new eShop game from the creators of Fluidity? *beep*, done and done.

Good for business, bad for our wallets! (All game logos are complete mock-ups).

Of course, knowing Nintendo they would make sure there are plenty of parental controls and security features, for example, limiting it to less than $50 a day or requiring your PIN. The other major feature would be toys. I'm talking Skylanders but for many more games. I'm not too keen on some aspects of this idea, as changing characters by swapping around physical toys seems like a chore to me (obviously not for kids, or Neal Ronahan). but getting a figurine in a special edition version of a game, that unlocks bonus content would be very cool, a lot easier than entering a 12-digit code and have more purpose than a Halo cat helmet.

Another feature that doesn't interest me, but probably would interest many, is trading card games. Here in Japan there are arcade machines that recognise cards (sometimes tokens) when placed on the machine. They tend to be battler type games, some even have multiplayer modes where you can battle the guy next to you. I could imagine a game where you place the GamePad in the middle of a mat, two kids facing each other, watching the battle take place on the TV screen. If linked with a popular franchise, I could see that becoming crazy popular, even outside of Japan (Pokemon anyone?).

Pokemon Tretta arcade with NFC card, tokens & carry case.

The last feature I want to talk about was, at one point, a sure thing but now I'm not so confident it will happen. I thought Wii U games were going to be sold on NFC cards in stores, alongside the boxed versions. However if the situation on the 3DS is anything to go by, I can't see that happening just yet. If they're not even selling cards with numbers printed on, I can't see them sending out more expensive, chipped NFC cards to stores. Nintendo seems to still fall on the side of retailers selling boxed games for now, although they might start slowly introducing download codes in the future, we're a long way off at the moment. If you can guy games directly from the eShop, it shouldn't matter to the core gamers though.

It's just my dream of Mums, Grandmas and Aunties going into a store, buying a download card for $10 less than the boxed version and slipping it into your birthday card seems like a long forgotten dream (for now). It's a shame because that could really kick off digital sales better than anything Sony or Microsoft have ever done, without cutting game stores out the picture altogether.

What would you like to see done with NFC? Would you spend $60 instead of $50 on the next 3D Mario game if it came with a figure? Would you buy NFC trading cards, how about full games on NFC cards? Sound off below!

Its almost like they're waiting until a certain time to tell us more about the Wii U's features...

Wait...

AilingforaleAugust 25, 2012

I might be willing to buy stuff for NFC type games, but like many things with a bajillion add ons, I kind of feel that they should (even though they wouldn't for monetary reasons) either drop the price quickly after launch of the game or just have it cheap.  To me it makes since the the price of admission isn't just the $60 for the game but all the add ons that go along with it.

However, if there is anything Skylanders has taught me as a retail associate, parents will drop loads on what their kids whine for.  Will I be this way when my kid drops?

I know, I know it's just the complete silence since it's announcement that worries me slightly.
I really hope they dedicate a large section of the Wii U conference to NFC, explaining what it will be used for, what games will use it, the tie-ins they're going for.
With the recent comment from Michael Pachter about Wii U Burger King toys coming in October, I do hope that they're NFC toys!

I too hope that these add-on toys don't become a way to milk parents of money.
As for me - I'll probably be the one buying the toys "for my son"  ;)

I think pikmin 3 would be a great use for this, like add your red pikmin totem and boom you get 50 pikmin, however it can only be used once per gameday. That totem costs $9.99.

you buy a green 1up mushroom and use that when  you need help. That costs $3.99

etc.

I think its a cute and fun idea but I think its going to be the Wii U ar cards...meaning it will be used at launch and collect dust. I was really hoping for more or updated ar games post 3ds launch and its been a year and NOTHING. More modes for ar fishing or shooting wouldn't be difficult but nope that shit is never going to be used again. Kid Icarus is using them but the stuff built into the system should be updated but its not.

I'm sorry but is this topic really necessary when we know Nintendo will be having their big Wii U conference on September 13th when things like NFC features will finally be shown off.  Once again, Nintendo doesn't reveal major info on things until at least 2 months before release and with the conference in less then 3 weeks now, there's a 100% chance you'll get all your NFC info then.

+1 to the both of ye.

TeaHeeAugust 26, 2012

I have always believed that NFC would be used for card games at least in Japan.  I swipe my cards you swipe your cards and then watch the ensuing chaos on the TV.  Hopefully they put a little more production value into than Magic the Gathering games.

The other thought I have had for NFC is free to play games.  I believe Iwata alluded to its use on the Wii U  in one of his speeches, and almost every podcast and article I read seems to think that free to play is the future for the gaming industry.  Wouldn't it be amazing if Nintendo was actually ahead of the curve on this one.  I have actually been hoping that RFN, Connectivity or the Famicast would address this topic.  Is free to play really the future of gaming?  I know Nintendo will probably not be truly keen on this idea for some of their major franchises and if NFC is used for free to play games it will probably be third parties that use it , but what would a free to play game look like from Nintendo?

BlkPaladinAugust 26, 2012

There is a rumor that BK will have NFC enabled toys at the end of October.

(speculation)In addition NFC enabled toys could house small games if the Wii U had a "NFC channel". You get a promo/toy from the store, and they wouldn't need to be bound to a certain title. Scan it you open a short game to play. Say there is a Kirby toy to celebrate the anniversary each toy would have a different game, collect them all. (/speculation)

Since when has Nintendo ever answered all our burning questions within one conference? They didn't answer any over four separate meetings at E3! :P:

They may mention it, but I doubt they will go into super detail and give loads of uses and ideas like my article did. I also wanted to know what you guys want from NFC...

Remember they have a lot of things to cover, launch games, price, pack-ins, online, eShop, new game announcements (maybe) - NFC could be bottom of the pile!

Anth0nyAugust 26, 2012

I was surprised they pretty much ignored the feature at E3. I expect to see it at the September 13 press conference for Skylanders.

Also, Smash Bros NFC trophies. Guaranteed to happen.

MagicCow64August 26, 2012

Any counter speculation that they may have dropped the feature to bring costs down either for components or tech licensing? Like, maybe it'll be built in but not activated in some territories, similar to how the Wii could play DVDs but didn't?

ThePermAugust 26, 2012

Maybe They'll announce that Pokémon game we all want.

They just announced it at E3, right? I doubt they'd have changed their mind since then.

ShyGuyAugust 26, 2012

Pokemon Figurines with NFC would be a gold mine.

StogiAugust 27, 2012

If Nintendo ever makes that App they were talking about, then it could be an innovate way to do spotpass. Which reminds me, does 3DS have NFC?

OblivionAugust 27, 2012

It does through Skylanders, right? I'm not sure though. Ask Unclebob. :P

famicomplicatedJames Charlton, Associate Editor (Japan)August 27, 2012

3DS does not have NFC. I'm guessing you need that accessory for it.

One thing I don't know is if the 3DS one is wireless, seeing as there isn't a USB port on it!

Skylanders portal for 3DS uses the IR port.

Also, most (if not all. I only the Wii version) portals on other systems are wireless USB.

A cursory glance at a Wikipedia page would have answered that question. :P

I'm not entirely sure how this feature works, but it sounds more like it's going to be used for nothing but marketing gimmicks and not to actually enhance games. If that's the case, I'll pass.

Only Neal Ronahan can look at Skylanders Wiki entries  :P:

I doubt I'd ever try and "collect 'em all" if a HUGE range of toys came out like 300+ Smash Bros trophies or 600+ Pokemon figures, but I'd only get a couple of my favourites for sure.

Of course, there's always the people who have every single Kid Icarus AR card and two of every Pokemon trading card (English and Japanese) - those are the people who should be afraid, very afraid!

ShyGuyAugust 27, 2012

What if they make perverted anime figurines with NFC? A million dollars from Halbred alone.

famicomplicatedJames Charlton, Associate Editor (Japan)November 03, 2014

Just diggin up this ancient post because I wanted to gloat about how right I was, plus some parts have become relevant again!

I'd especially to call out the folk who had a go at me saying this was a premature article to write as Nintendo were about to "reveal all" in a (then) upcoming conference. Not only did they not mention NFC then, they didn't even speak of it for over an additional year after that! ;D :cool; ;D

On the positive side of things, Suica card payment is now available in Japan and the Smash "trophies" thing did come true!

It's nice to see stuff is coming true FINALLY.

Their NFC feature is ripping you off with cheap plastic electronic dolls.

famicomplicatedJames Charlton, Associate Editor (Japan)November 05, 2014

How many are you buying then?

pokepal148Spencer Johnson, Contributing WriterNovember 05, 2014

-18

famicomplicatedJames Charlton, Associate Editor (Japan)November 06, 2014

If you buy 18 of them then throw them away that still counts as a purchase, silly!

pokepal148Spencer Johnson, Contributing WriterNovember 06, 2014

no as in I plan to burn down the first store I see with at least 18 of them.

Call it a fire sale ;)

My post in this topic is spot-on as well.
