Nintendogs + Cats Journal

Cat Get!

by Danny Bivens - March 17, 2011, 12:58 am EDT

Cats are in the house and they're not leaving!

In my first entry, I mentioned that I was not quite sure how to unlock cats in Nintendogs + Cats on the Nintendo 3DS. Well, I am still not 100 percent sure how I did it, but visiting the kennel in the game was the key to my success. After playing for a few weeks, I did not even think about heading to the kennel until recently. At the kennel, you can not only view and interact with all of the dogs that are for sale, but you can also play with the cats. Shortly after finding this out, I saved up some money to purchase a cat and a few days later, I returned to the kennel to choose a cat to take home.

In the game, there are three different kinds of cats: standard, oriental, and long hair. After you choose the type that you want, you are then asked to choose the color. Finally, you are brought to a holding area for the kind of cat you selected and are able to choose from three different cats. Once you pick your cat and hand over your money, you are the owner of a brand new kitten.

My new kitty cat.

The standard cat seemed to be the cutest in the game, so that is the one that I decided to purchase. One interesting thing to note as well is that the cats are significantly cheaper than the dogs in Nintendogs + Cats. The going rate for cats is usually around 88,000 yen and the price for dogs is somewhere around 148,000 yen. After getting my cat home, I was expecting to be able to name her right away. However, the game required that I get to know my cat a little bit better before doing so. After building up a few trainer points by petting and playing with my new kitten, I was able to name her.

It was rough at first, but they warmed up to each other eventually.

I ended up naming my cat Dinah. When I first brought Dinah home, she did not seem to get along well with my puppy, Hachi. She would constantly hiss and paw at her. Over time, Hachi seemed to get used to the new member of the family, and now even shares a drinking dish with her. They have even reached a point where they occasionally play together. To be perfectly honest, there does not seem like there is much to do with your cat in the game. I bought Dinah some toys and even a “cat tower,” but like a real cat, she seems to do her own thing, consistently ignoring me and my attempts to entertain her. Even when I try to initiate some kind of contact, she plays for a little while but then very quickly loses interest. At the moment, I am still exploring the different kinds of options that Nintendogs + Cats presents for the friendly felines. Hopefully, there is more to it than what I have came across so far.

Thanks for playing with the toys I bought for you...jerk...

I'm not a Nintendogs fan, but that sounds absolutely adorable  ;D .

I think I may be the only soul in this green Earth of ours that logged in more than hundreds of our in his copy of Nintendogs. I mean I can see why the game would lose its appeal quickly since once you obtained all the trophies, all the rewards and all three puppies the game would become a chore. But still, I grew fondly of my little guys, so much so that I named them after famous dogs and people and even taught them tricks based on their own personas.

And truth to be told, I can't wait to play the 3DS version, despite owning two dogs and many cats myself. I just love the technology and concept behind it.

Honestly, if you really dug the first game, this will kore than likely be right up your alley as well. There does seem to be a bit more to do and the Mii's give the game a bit more personality. And graphically, it looks pretty well to boot.

does changing the apartment really matter? I remember the first game it didn't matter the  dogs still played in a little arena and the apartment didn't have furniture the dogs would bite or anything of that nature

Mr. Vega, I don't think that it really can do too much. I do know that with the cats, it MIGHT play a small role. For example, something in the game said, "Cats like high places," so MAYBE if I bought a tall cabinet or something, the cat would love being up there, and give me higher trainer points? Just a theory.

Those animals look so ridiculously fluffy. Obviously, that's what the next generation of handhelds is all about. :)

Rorschach's Journal: Nintendog carcass in alley, tire tread on burst stomach. This handheld platform is afraid of me, I have seen its true hardware specs.

After playing the first game, I feel there is nothing different enough to warrant a purchase of this. I hope I can rent it/demo it somewhere to confirm if I'll buy or not.

WASH THE CAT. YOU CAN WASH THE CAT. SHAMPOO +CAT NOW.

Does the cat hiss and try to scratch you when you try to wash it? Otherwise I can see this being called a pet sim.

Nah, it's really unrealistic. You just wash for a while with the sponge, then rinse him off with the shower head and you get the all clean now message. You can however turn the pets now when washing, so you can wash the cats (and dogs) from various angles.

You know, I've ran into some issues when washing my cat. Usually after you rinse off all of the soap, the game automatically ends the whole bath sequence. I've ran into some instances where I rinse the cat off for a good minute straight, but the game doesn't automatically end the sequence. I recall this happening in the original Nintendogs. It's not that big of a deal as you can just back out of the bathroom and your pet is clean. Just a little annoying. AND, my dog and cat tend to get dirtier a heck of a lot easier than what they did in the at first. *shrugs*
