E3 2009 Reflections

James Jones' E3

The NWR staff reflects on the E3 that was.

I'm at a disadvantage. I read and edited all the other postings before I wrote mine. What can I say about E3 2009 that hasn't already been said? Well, I could relate embarrassingly personal internal monologues.

Before I got to the show I was really concerned. Things have been hectic back home, and I really dislike travel. I'm not good with new people, and I hate putting myself in a situation where I can't plan out exactly what I need to do, and how I want to do it. Basically, getting on a plane and flying 2,000 miles was just about the craziest thing I could do (Lindy's Note: Next year, teach James how to relax).

Sitting on that plane, watching Paul Blart: Mall Cop (My Note: Not as bad as you might think, but still not good), I resolved that it could be a rough week. Los Angeles seemingly tried to reinforce this position, with some of the most heinous public transit failures I've ever seen.

After spending three hours to just travel a few miles, I finally reached NWR HQ: The Los Angeles Clarion. I had spent the last three or so hours on the phone with Nick DiMola, trying to compare our notes and figure out how the hell to get to where we needed to be.

When I finally made it Nick and Francesca had already checked in. After a few minutes somewhat awkwardly marveling at all our Korean Language Television options, I was able to relax.

From that point, a trip to the strangest McDonald's I've ever entered ("DVD's $3"), the entire week devolved into a blur. To be clear, it was a good kind of blur.

The show was as expected, which was fantastic, but events like this come down to the people. We have some great people on staff.

Everyone was awesome.

Sharing a room with Zachery Miller was a blast.

Being told by a Korean gentleman that I needed to return to Jesus, while my supposed friends watched from a car, was both harrowing and unnerving.

A late night trip through L.A. in the back of Scion with Chuck Jose, Jared Rosenberg, Neal Ronaghan, and Lauren Lewandoski was both stupid and hilarious.

Visiting the Sassony Arcade with Jared Rosenberg, where you can play forever on $1 - assuming you don't mind the game being listed on the cabinet not being the game actually inside it - was a surprisingly fun way for the last two NWR staffers left in L.A. to spend a Friday afternoon.

The best memory from E3 comes with you, the readers. Since E3 concluded I've received messages about how much people enjoyed reading what we wrote, and listening to our nearly-nightly round-tables. Hearing from you all is what makes this work so rewarding (it certainly isn't the pay) (Lindy's Note: LOL). All it took for the four hours of sleep, limited meals, continued and extended sickness, and four-thousand miles of travel to be worth it was to hear one positive thing from a reader. Luckily for me I've heard lots of positive things.

With that, we tie a bow on E3 2009. We might post a few more videos or an impression or two, but for all intents and purposes this concludes Nintendo World Report's coverage of the resurgent Electronic Entertainment Expo.

As always, feel free to offer your thoughts on both the content of this feature and our coverage of the craziest three days in gaming in the Talkback thread.

And once again, thanks to all of you for reading!
