See how Billy Berghammer & Desmond Gaban respond to the news from IGN64.

Billy Berghammer:

First off, I want to commend IGN on a very well written article. This is some pretty good stuff here. Granted I do disagree with some of it, but it is well thought out, and well presented. I have broken down my comments to each section of the article.

Development Kits: I wasn't too surprised to hear this information. I know of a few third parties out there that have Dolphin games in development using their emulation software, and are awaiting to get actual dev kits.

Developers out there aren't all that happy about this, which is understandable. How would you feel if you wanted to get a game ready for the launch of Dolphin, and weren't able to get the tools to finish the game? Not a good scenario when you are trying to court new developers, or developers that were previously skeptical of developing for Dolphin.

DVD. I like the concept of this Mini-DVD setup. It should (look at Dreamcast...nothings perfect) deter piracy, which is a pretty big deal right now. I doubt Nintendo wants to see Bleem have their way with Dolphin software.

Movie playback isn't really an issue with me personally because I have a DVD player. But I think it would be a good idea. The caddy concept I have long time been a fan of. I don't want to take any chances with scratching up my Dolphin DVDs at all. If Nintendo decided to go with the Mini DVD in a caddy, and then allowed regular DVD's to be played as well, it could prove to be a win win situation. Whatever the case, Nintendo's fear is piracy. If there is any chance of it, they will avoid it.

Polygons. After attending the Friday night IGN Chat so many people were freaking about the numbers. First of all, I'll totally agree with the article saying that if these numbers are correct, or close to it...Mario will be looking SWEET. Second, it also depends what you do with those polygons. Numbers mean little to me. The end result is what matters. Case in point. Look at how many PS2 fans shut up after PS2 looked like crap at E3. It's how you utilize this power is what really matters. I do expect games at 60 frames per second. If Dreamcast can do NFL2K1 online at 60 frames per second, so better Dolphin.

The controller: They are two very interesting concept drawings of what the Dolphin controller could look like. I don't like either of them separately. If they could take the A-B-X-Y buttons from the second one, and toss them on the first design I would like that better. The Camera Stick concept is pretty cool as well. Having a stick that you could fix your angle, and then press it in to set it (like clicking it in) would be a cool feature. This stick could also be prgrammed to do a multitude of things. There are also one or two things that I see that are lacking from this.

-Headphone/Microphone jacks: Or two make the situation a little easier, how about a headset? I want voice over IP! When I'm playing Dolphin Wave Race online, and running Justin and Mikey over with my JetSki, I want to be talkin' a whole lotta smack! A headset would be very optimal for this!

-VMU type screen: I want this. Sega has come up with an original idea that Nintendo could improve upon. Color would be nice as well, but price is an issue. There's too much open space on that controller.

-D-PAD: I WANT A FREAKIN' D-PAD. Playing puzzle games is a horrific experience with an analog stick. I want my D-Pad. The life of a D-Pad is not over dammit! And fighting games? Ewwww. Nintendo...we need a D-Pad!

Well worse comes to worse...if Nintendo leaves a D-Pad off the Dolphin controller maybe a third party controller would have one. You never know. Ewwww...Third party.

-Color Recognition. The N64 controller was rumored to have this. I want the Dolphin to recognize what color controller I have. This would be excellent for sports games, or any other Multiplayer type game. Green controller...green highlighted player, or say even, a green Kart of Mario in Mario Kart. Not a real big deal, but it would be a cool addition.

I don't honestly think the Dolphin controller will look like how these mock ups. Nintendo has something pretty cool up their sleeves. You can be rest assured that. The big M and the boys at "N" have something brewing. I=as been playing the info-hiding game for years. And they are damn good at it.

Desmond Gaban:

The size of the DVD mini disc bugs the heck out of me, 1~2 gigs may be enough for any game, especially since most PS2 games are under 650 megs, but still, Nintendo choosing again to avoid a standard may cause them problems.

And I don't buy that it will solve their piracy problems, because someone in Hong Kong will just make a device that can read those DVD mini-discs.

The DVD mini-disc will guarantee that Square will not develop for the Dolphin, or at least put another nail in the coffin of the hope of Square returning.

Although I guess one good thing is that it will discourage developers from making FMV adventure games, like Enix's PS2 game, 0 Story, which spans 2 DVD-ROMs.
