NWR Trivia

Rules and Regulations

by Aaron Kaluszka - September 8, 2005, 10:14 pm EDT

It has become a Nintendo scene Friday night institution... it is NWR Trivia and it will bend your brain!

These are the Rules and Regulations for NWR Trivia. By participating, it is assumed that you have read and understand these rules. The rules are strictly enforced, with a zero-tolerance policy. If you're just showing up to have a good time, following these rules is your best bet.

Be aware that the the general #nwr rules still apply during trivia, as well as before and after. You must also follow those rules at all times as well.

Trivia Regulations

  • All non-staffers of Nintendo World Report are free to participate. All you need to do is show up, and you're part of the game!

  • All players are required to keep the same nickname from the start of trivia until the end. If you're not careful, any points you earn might be split against two different nicknames!

  • Before a question is asked, a "Next Question..." warning will appear, in bold. After this comes up, the actual question will come up within the next 7 to 20 seconds, so be ready for it.

  • After the warning, questions are asked, in bold, one at a time, in-channel. The first person to answer the question in-channel (in the chat window of the host, which will probably be in a different order than yours) will receive a point. In the event that no one can answer a question correctly within the specified time limit, no points will be given for that question.

  • Between questions, the chat host may "set mode: +m." This means the chatroom is moderated, and no one in it will be able to talk. This is normal, and helps the host get a hold of things after each question. Please don't leave and re-join the channel, as this does nothing but annoy the host.

  • After half the questions have been asked, there will be a short 5-10 minute half-time period for everyone to take a break.

  • After all questions have been asked, the person with the highest amount of points is the winner. In case of a tie, the tied players will answer a tie-breaker. The winner of the tie-breaker wins the game. In the event that no one can answer a tie-breaker correctly, a new tie-breaker will be asked.

  • In a tie-breaker, only the players who are tied will be allowed to answer the tie-breaker question. In this format, the first correct response will get a point and win. There is no limit on the number of guesses per player.

  • All decisions by the judges are final. 99% of disputes will fall on deaf ears, so learn to live with what the outcome to a question is.

Trivia Rules

If you break one of the following rules, you will be automatically banned from the chatroom. We enforce these rules with zero-tolerance. The trivia host does not have time to baby-sit 100 people. If you're in the chatroom just to play trivia, you won't have to worry about breaking any of these rules. However, those that wish to screw around will find themselves gone before they know it. Once again, these banning rules are ZERO TOLERANCE. This is your one and only warning.

  • Do not use bold, underline, color, or any other abnormal text in the channel. This is reserved for the chat hosts only, since people will react to any outstanding text in the channel. There is no reason for you to use any special text while you chat. You will be immediately banned for doing this.

  • Never ask for the next question. People that do this are basically trying to rush the host along. Don't do this. Ever. We'll ask the next question when we're damn well ready to, and you trying to make it go any faster will just get you the boot.

  • Do not Private Message the trivia host, for any reason. The host(s) need to deal with as much as 50 lines of text a second, so PMs of any form will not only be ignored, they will aggravate the host to the point of banning you. If there's something you need to say to the host, say it in the channel between questions, since the host needs to read every line of text during trivia anyways.

  • Never answer a question with a number or color, or any form thereof. The answer is never a number. Responding to a question with a number in any way, shape or form will get you banned immediately. If a question asks for the name of a level, DO NOT answer with "Level 1" or "Stage 3," because this also applies as a number answer. Colors are just as bad, since people will randomly guess colors until they hit the right one. No question will ever have a color as an answer, so responding with one will get you banned.

  • Do not randomly guess or flood the channel with guesses to a question. To put it simply, if you have no idea what the answer to a question is, don't say anything. All the questions in NWR Trivia are designed to be un-guessable, meaning the only ones that can answer it are the ones who know the answer or the ones who look up the answer. If you're caught spewing random responses, you're gone.

Team Trivia Regulations

Once in a while, NWR holds two-man team competitions for NWR Trivia. All of the above rules and regulations apply, including these listed below.

  • Players choose teams before Trivia begins. Get to trivia early so that it will be easier to find one. In the event you can't find a partner at the start, assign yourself to a team anyways, so that sometime later you can pick one up.

  • Players play with a partner, with nicknames in Teamname-Nickname format. For example, SHINEGET-Joe and SHINEGET-Mac would be team SHINEGET. For the sake of scoring, please try to keep team names short and reasonable.

  • Only two players to a team. If three or more people are listed under the same team name, the entire team will be ignored, and unless the team breaks up, you will all be banned.

  • Players are required to keep the same Teamname and Nickname for the duration of trivia. If for some reason you lose your partner during trivia, you are not permitted to join another team or change your name.

  • If two teamless players wish to join forces, one of the players must forfeit all of his or her points. The other player's points earned prior to the team's formation will not contribute towards team points. It is the teammates' responsibility to notify the host of the new team. Until the host acknowledges the new team he will continue to score as though the two players were competing individually.

  • To promote the teamplay aspect of Team Planet Trivia, for every point scored by both members of a team, an additional bonus point will be awarded to that team. For example, if SHINEGET-Joe scores 2 points, and SHINEGET-Mac scores 3 points, Team SHINEGET would receive 2 bonus points, since both members scored at least 2 points.

  • Points are shared between players on a team. The team with the largest total of trivia points and bonus points will be the winner.

  • In the event that there are prizes for team play, each member of a winning team must score points in order to receive prizes. In other words, you don't get anything if you don't get a point, even if your partner wins the game for your team.

Miscellaneous Disclaimers & Notes

  • Multi-part questions are usually followed by "ONE LINE" in parentheses. This is merely an explicit reminder: one line is implied in ANY multi-part question.

  • Questions followed by "EXACT SPELLING" or "SPELLING COUNTS" in parentheses means the answer must be spelled and punctuated correctly. Capitalization is not important. If exact spelling is not specified, the host has the final say on what is "good enough" to be correct.

  • Since it's impossible to control what people say or do, Nintendo World Report is not responsible for epileptic seizures, injury, death, hax0ring, invasion of privacy by a third party, emotional distress, chat room lag, mom jokes, or whatever else could possibly go wrong in a chat room.

  • In the case that there is a prize, prize is provided as-is. Nintendo World Report is not liable for whatever problems the prize my cause you and makes no warranty, written, expressed, or implied. In order for us to send your prize to you, you must supply to us your mailing address. Nintendo World Report assures you that this information will be used only to send your prize off to you, and for no other purpose.

  • When an individual wins a noteworthy* prize, he/she becomes ineligible to compete in NWR Trivia or Radio Trivia sessions in which noteworthy* prizes are awarded for ninety days.

*NWR-sponsored prizes of estimated value greater than $15 before shipping are dubbed noteworthy.

  • Please allow 2-3 weeks for the delivery of a prize. If, after 3 weeks, you have still not recieved your prize, please contact the head of NWR Trivia, Michael "TYP" Cole, and include the nickname you won trivia with, the date of trivia you won, and the prize or prizes you are waiting for.

  • Contrary to popular belief, the question-writing staff of Nintendo World Report is human. We're all prone to make some goofs when writing a question, scoring accuracy, or making a call on a kick-ban, but the fact of the matter is, there's so much going on in the chatroom at once that crap happens. Although we are sometimes wrong, we're still more right than you'll ever be, so learn to live with it.

  • And of course, Nintendo World Report is not responsible, ever.
