Johnny tries to grapple Mr. Wang in this 2D stealth game.

UFO Interactive has a checkered history with the 3DS eShop, producing mostly underwhelming games. However, Johnny Impossible bucks the trend. This 2D stealth side-scroller is fun, challenging, and well worth playing, even with its issues.

Johnny is tasked with retrieving three codes in different locations to stop the villainous Mr. Wang from launching a devastating missile at the world. The game’s three levels are almost presented as mini Metroid-style stages, as you have to explore the environments to get power-ups that let you access new areas. You get a whole armory of upgradeable weapons and items throughout the game, including night vision goggles, a stun gun, and a grappling hook. Exploring the game’s levels is generally fun, though the three go by quickly.

Fortunately, they are challenging, but more so because of the game’s weird time limit. You only have a set amount of time to beat each level, and that number goes down every time you are spotted or caught. You can save anywhere, but even still, that time limit restricts the joy of exploring. While having time trials as an alternate method to play the game is perfectly fine, limiting players from the outset seems reductive.

Still, Johnny Impossible is fun stealth game that is worth checking out if you’re looking for a short side-scrolling experience on the eShop.
