Dancing with the fairy in the pale moon light.

Petite Games' second game for the Wii U eShop is certainly more interesting than the last. Their first title, named Toon Tanks, was a straightforward and simple arcade experience that you could spent a solid amount of time with. Sadly though, the title was too repetitive and it didn't last in the end. With Midnight, you can clearly see how things are further developed and that makes this puzzler all the more striking.

Midnight is, once again, a simple game to understand. You will fling a square-shaped fairy across the screen and try to get it in a glowing hole somewhere in the level. The developer describes it themselves as a physics-based golf puzzle game and I feel that is accurate. You will have to deal with various obstacles to get it to the right location and have to do it in as few turns as possible. The quicker you will able to do this, the better your star rank will be at the end. It is entertaining to constantly try again and find new ways to solve certain puzzles.

A good stream of mechanics and gimmicks are introduced across your adventure. This will keep the game fresh and it stops the ride from growing stale. With just 28 stages, Midnight knows how to pull a punch accurately, though there is just one fatal flaw. Midnight is quite unbalanced and the difficulty goes up and down in quick succession. At moments I felt that I was adequate, while in other situations I was ready to smash my Wii U GamePad. With a few more stages and a bit more polish, this game would have been perfect.

As far as visuals are concerned, the game looks quite solid. It features a lush silhouette art style, which immediately catches the eye and encourages you to keep playing. The calming music fits the tone perfectly, though the game over sound could have used a little bit more work.

Midnight it a fun little puzzler and it will do the job for the people in search of one. The puzzles are smart and it controls solidly, but the ride is quite an unbalanced one. The difficulty curve and the amount of puzzles could certainly have been better. As it stands though, you can do a whole lot worse and Midnight does what it says on the tin.

Summary

Pros
  • Controls nicely
  • Lush style
  • Nice and solid variety
Cons
  • Could have used more puzzles
  • Difficulty curve goes up and down
