Bplus returns with a decent, cute puzzler for the holidays.

After taking a big gamble with Bit Boy!! Arcade, developer Bplus returns with somewhat of a lighter game. With a name like PUZZLEBOX setup, you would think that it would be some throwaway puzzle game. However, you would be wrong! The game literally turns things upside down as we hold our Nintendo 3DS systems in a brand new way.

The manner you are playing on your Nintendo 3DS might be silly, but PUZZLEBOX setup presents clever gameplay mechanics that go hand in hand with it. You will have to tap on colored boxes on the touchscreen and these will drop to the 3D screen below to form environments and figures. You will have to get used to how you play, in particular if you own a smaller Nintendo 3DS. Your taps will become somewhat inconsistent on the unit and therefore the 2DS and 3DS XL are more suited for it. The boxes representing the various colors are kind of tiny and it would have been better if they were just slightly bigger.

The game offers more than 60 levels and you will go through them at quite a rapid pace. These levels are split into two different game modes, and each is quite different in how it operates. With Classic Mode, the stage will scroll and you will have to drop blocks at the right moment. You will have to tap on the correct colors and fill the landscape piece by piece before it leaves the screen. It becomes quite tricky to do so, though Bplus has done a good job making it suitable for multiple types of players. You can adjust the speed before you start playing and during the dull moments, you can press a speed button to push you forward faster.

In Copycat mode, you will have to deal with a still screen. It is more of a time attack mode where you have fill in the picture as quickly as you possibly can. You are given a bit of freedom by being allowed to make a few mistakes and you won't get heavily punished for it as a result. This made me not as engaged with this mode, however, and I mostly played through them to get back to the action packed Classic stages. The Copycat stages do offer somewhat more replay value as going for a new record is kind of exciting.

As far as the presentation is concerned, PUZZLEBOX setup features a simple look that overly suits the gameplay. The background offers variety with the foreground mostly being filled with pixel blocks. The wide collection of themed puzzles on display make it more stand out overall. Variety can also be found in the background music. While I can't really remember any tunes in particular, it did do a good job mixing together the levels for something neat.

PUZZLEBOX setup is a fun little puzzler on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. The gameplay is addicting and features a difficulty curve that will suit most players quite well. The game becomes a difficult sale if you are still playing with a regular 3DS and Copycat mode is not as exciting as Classic, but those are really the only gripes with the title. With a simple presentation and very interesting controls, PUZZLEBOX setup knows how to stand out in the overly busy puzzle game market.
