Super Mario Bros. 3 Review

After all these years, SMB3 still stands out as a classic.

For what seemed like ages, Nintendo promised that Super Mario Bros. 3 was coming to the Virtual Console. Months passed, and as the anticipation grew Nintendo was quiet concerning a release. It seemed like it would never see the light of day on modern consoles, but we’re finally here! Super Mario Bros. 3 is now on the Wii U Virtual Console. So now the question remains: is SMB3 one of the best games of all time? Interesting question to say the least, but I can say this: Super Mario Bros. 3 is a classic game that stands the test of time.

The game is split up in eight different worlds. You’ll travel through sand, sea, air, ice and lava in order to reach the Princess and encounter a myriad of challenges along the way. The level design in the game has drastically improved over the previous two Super Mario Bros. games.

The variety presented throughout is staggering compared to the previous two games. As far as graphics go, well, they’re dated, but they’re simple and have a consistent aesthetic. I did notice some weird graphical glitches throughout gameplay in the Wii U version of the game (not sure if this was in the original version or not), but it was hardly an issue regardless.

Super Mario Bros. 3 is a blast. Everything I remembered about the original has remained true decades later. The music, the worlds, and the gameplay remain something that Nintendo should be proud of to this day. Super Mario Bros. 3 was the pinnacle of the NES era, and it’s well worth the price of admission.

Summary

Pros
  • Distinct, creative worlds
  • Diverse level design
  • Fun items and power ups
Cons
  • Some graphical glitches

I usually hate people who are mad about games not getting a 10... but uh, WTF? Unless these graphical things really are a WiiU new problem, HOW DARE YE!

To the GALLOWS!

Why so low?

There are only a handful of NES games that truly deserve a 10. This is one of them.

This is the greatest travesty of a review in the history of video game journalism. Not only should this game have gotten a 10, but we should have coded higher numbers into the site database just to give them to this game.

a 9 out of 10 is low? i don't think so, dawg.

maybe in retrospect a 9.5 wouldn't have been so bad, but what is done is done. based on my own tastes and thoughts I determined that was the proper score to give. That's what reviewing a game is all about!

the graphical glitches didn't play a part in the scoring, btw. It didn't have an effect on my experience one bit but it is noticeable so I had to put it there.

I like SMB3, but SMW is the better game. And the graphical glitches are very noticeable in the 3DS version, yes enough for me to argue against a 10/10. There is even slow down sometimes (which is annoying in a platformer).

Yeah there are better versions of this game out there which makes a 10 hard for me to justify.

Pretty sure the game always had the graphical glitches - mostly on the sides of the screen. Back when the NES was out, most TVs were rounded off on the corners so you couldn't see as much of the screen. Nintendo used the invisible sides, and the scoreboard on the bottom to allow for more things on the screen with less flickering or slow-down. Now that TVs no longer have those rounded-off corners, the glitches are visible.

You guys shouldn't get upset over something that clearly never happened.

I'm one of the suckers that bought the Super Mario All Stars Wii Disc.  Although I played the NES version first, I always liked the SNES version best (Colors were a bit too muted for my tastes as a kid).

I bought the SMAS disc on Wii too (which is why I won't buy the Wii U version of SMB3). I vastly prefer the SMAS versions of the SMB games. I still think it's worth buying on 3DS though to have a portable version.

Ha ha ha ha!! A "game"? Really?! A game is something like Hide and Seek, Solitaire or Stalking. SMB3 is software, plain and simple. Get it right and stop trying to make it into something it isn't because what it is is lousy. It can't send e-mail, I can't upload songs to it, it doesn't balance my taxes, nor does it do anything to prevent viruses. If this is what Nintendo calls software, no wonder the Wii U is failing. SMB3 doesn't do anything and the fact that it was rated as 9 out of 10 makes me wonder if anyone here has ever actually used a software program of any kind before. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got get back to hunting my prey.
