Scooby-Doo! Unmasked

by Daniel Bloodworth - August 29, 2005, 9:23 pm EDT

Don’t worry gang. Scooby Doo knows kung-fu and the bad guys are made of edible soy-based Mubber!

At the wheel of the Mystery Machine, Fred drives the gang to a special effects house where his cousin Jed makes movie monsters out of Mubber – a soy-based material that’s edible and breaks down under UV light. When they arrive at the facility though, the place is torn apart, Jed’s missing, and Jed’s boss thinks he stole the equipment and split. Fred’s understandably skeptical, and the gang heads off in search of clues to find out what really happened and make sure Jed’s alright.

You’ll take direct control of Scooby Doo himself as you explore three main worlds in search of clues, which lead you to new areas. Scooby is pretty versatile in his platforming moves: he can jump, do a wacky spin attack, dash or roll into enemies, ground pound from up high, use his front paws to climb along overhead rails or dash down zip lines, and even water-ski through sewers. There are also special suits for Scooby to find. The first one, available in Chinatown, turns Scooby into a kung-fu master, complete with an energy move that he unleashes with the words “Scooby Dooby Doo!”

The rest of the gang is there too, to help or be helped. Velma analyzes the clues you find. Shaggy throws any food you pick up into a pot to make crazy recipes (lobster and ice cream?) which increase your life bar. Fred turns certain items you find into monster traps and writes profiles on the monsters' strengths and weaknesses. Daphne – well Daphne may have helpful advice at times. Sometimes though, one of the team will be kidnapped, leaving Scooby to come to the rescue as he navigates complex platform sections and fights off waves of Mubbery monsters.

Scooby Doo! Unmasked tries to keep as close to the TV series as possible in its presentation. The characters are cel-shaded and look pretty close to what you’d expect. The main theme song starts the game, and at least one other tune comes directly from the show. The cast of the show (the modern episodes) handle the voice acting for their roles, which is used for in-game dialogue as well as the many cut-scenes – there’s even canned laughter for Scooby fans. Adam West even joins the cast, playing the role of Winslow Stanton, Jed’s boss.

So follow that trail of Scooby Snacks, watch out for Mubber-melting UV rays, and help the Mystery team prove Jed’s innocence and unmask the real crook.
