James Bond 007: From Russia With Love

by Karl Castaneda - July 1, 2005, 5:12 pm EDT

From PGC With Preview.

The 007 game franchise is full of highs and lows. 1997 saw a high with Goldeneye on the N64. Of course, the slew of titles that followed were a bit of a low. 2004’s Everything Or Nothing brought the series back on the map, only to have it lose ground again with the release of Goldeneye: Rogue Agent. Seeking to further this cosmic game of hot potato, Electronic Arts is pulling out all of the stops for their latest Bond-tastic release, From Russia With Love.

007 fans will immediately recognize that title, as it was the marquee for what was arguably one of the finest James Bond films. No need to worry about EA not doing the iconic movie service, as they’re serious about adapting it to the video game world in the smoothest way possible, chiefly by commissioning the great Sean Connery to reprise his role by providing his voice for the videogame.

Just like Everything Or Nothing, From Russia With Love is a third person action title that puts you in the guise of England’s finest secret agent, this time on a whirlwind adventure to stop the evil organization SPECTRE from throwing the world into disarray with their dastardly plan. Although a true representation is one of EA’s primary goals, they felt the film's plot didn’t include enough action to hold a player’s attention, ergo we find ourselves with a couple new levels and other minor tweaks to make From Russia With Love feel more like a game and less like an interactive movie. One especially interesting change is the addition of the jetpack, allowing Bond to take to the sky and combat his foes mid-air.

In true Electronic Arts fashion, the game looks great, with tons of detail in the character models and environments. The audio portion is shaping up nicely as well, thanks, but not limited to Sean Connery’s voice acting. Overall, it’s got the fabulous presentation that the film deserves, making this a hotly anticipated game for when it releases this November. And remember, shaken, not stirred.
