Star Wars Ep. III: Revenge of the Sith (GBA)

by Bonnie Ruberg - April 15, 2005, 8:03 pm EDT

Check out the details on the latest GBA continuation of the Star War saga.

Like previous Star Wars games, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith sticks close to the events of the movie, offering players a chance to step into the on-screen action. This side-scroller provides gamers with the opportunity to play as either Anakin or Obi-Wan, who, though initially completing identical missions, soon wind up on divergent paths. No matter which of the two you choose, three levels of difficulty are available: Padawan, Jedi and Master. Fighting style is essentially the same for both characters, though objectives differ. The plot itself is narrated through segments of on-screen text, accompanied by emotionally-charged character avatars. Gameplay is broken down into two types of missions: exploratory levels and boss battles. Most of the latter integrate important plot points from the movie. Exploratory levels also contain mini-bosses.

Aside from primarily human bosses, the game’s enemies (up to the current point of development) are all droids. They vary in appearance, difficulty and type of attack. These droids can be destroyed via one-on-one contact with Anakin’s or Obi-Wan’s lightsaber. Or, as is often helpful when many enemies appear simultaneously, you can use your lightsaber to deflect lasers, sending the beams back at the droids. You can also use your force powers to pick up debris and assault your enemies. Lastly, both Anakin and Obi-Wan learn special attacks as they move throughout the game. Each character has a health bar and a force bar that can be refilled by collecting power-up items left behind by certain defeated enemies. For special attacks, Obi-Wan has a focus bar, while Anakin has a fury bar. Level-ups for characters can be purchased at the end of each completed stage according to the number of green tokens collected.

The graphics for the game are artfully executed, involving complex and highly-manipulatable sprites, though backgrounds are often repeated. Sound elements, such as level background music, while limited to the capabilities of the GBA, are varied, non-intrusive and highly derivative of the music from the Star Wars movies. Fighting and menu interaction is clear and intuitive. The game will also come with a multiplayer option.

Revenge of the Sith on the GBA looks to be an enjoyable addition to the Star Wars game series.
