Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

by Michael Cole - September 21, 2002, 12:31 am EDT

3DO is bringing the famous biblical legend to life through the magic of videogames!

Coming to every console as well as the PC, Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse pits the player against the forces of darkness as the archangel Abaddon. Featuring the talents of comic book legends Simon Bisley and Dave DeVrise as a guide, the game promises to be full of atmosphere and style.

Set in a harsh modern world, Abaddon (meaning destroyer) must search the land for the three Chosen, his fated mortal companions, and convince them to join his cause against the damned. Only when all four stand together will the world stand a chance against the Four Horsemen: Pestilence, War, Famine, and Death. Unfortunately for Abaddon, the scattered Chosen aren’t the purest of individuals, nor are they aware of their hidden potential, which will make things difficult for the hero. Jesse Horner, the first of the Chosen, is a kind and caring individual who also happens to be a prostitute. The second is truck driver Jimmy Ray Flint, a serial killer known to have killed 19 people he claims to be demons sent to help bring forth the Apocalypse. The final protagonist is the greedy Senator Anderson Scott, who is somehow responsible for the Four Horsemen’s ascension from Hell. Since his mistake he has come to suspect he is one of the Chosen, but his most impure character will prove to be a great obstacle. The Horsemen are also hunting down the Chosen, whom the evil ones recognize as a threat, so Abaddon must act quickly if he wishes to protect his companions and receive their aid!

Abaddon and the Chosen must combine their talents of weaponry and “slow time” magic to defeat the four visions of Hell and save humanity. 3DO describes Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse as an Action game with a dark, bloody atmosphere. Characters will utilize both short and long-range weapons such as swords, automatic guns and projectiles as well as various special techniques to obliterate the Horsemen and their lesser minions. Dark and surreal environments with blood, gore, wounds, and dismemberment are the norm, with other visual treats such as morphing, melting, high textures and dynamic (see-through) holes adding to the experience. 3DO is most certainly going for the cinematic experience, as it has recruited SmashCut Action Team (The Matrix, Fight Club) to aid them with the combat moves and animation—and let’s not forget finishing moves. To help further the plot 3DO has recruited the voices of Tim Curry, Lance Henriksen and Traci Lords. The environments are promised to be fully destructible for those gamers who love to demolish. The game features over 18 levels ranging from the near future to the post-Apocalyptic setting of World War III to Hell itself.

Four Horsmen of the Apocalypse is planned for release in the second quarter of 2003 and is expected to get a Mature rating for adult themes, brief nudity and extreme violence.
