Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO

by Ty Shughart - April 8, 2002, 2:17 pm EDT

The 'Mark of the Millenium' is coming to the GameCube!

Despite what people and photoshopped game boxes might tell you, Capcom vs SNK 3 isn't coming out for the GameCube anytime soon. However, Capcom revealed that Capcom vs SNK 2 is indeed coming out for the GameCube. As for when, we don't have a bloody clue.

Unless there are any special changes for the GameCube version, the game features 48 (!) characters, mostly from the King of Fighters and Street Fighter series, with some happy surprises.

This fighter plays like the good ol' 2D fighters we know and love with some important differences; first, the ratio system. You can play best of three rounds with a single character of King of Fighters style 3 on 3, or you can use the ratio system. Here's the basic idea; you divide four 'points' between one, two, or three characters to determine their strength. If you're confident with a single character, you can go for a powerful Ratio 4 - or maybe you'd like a pair of even Ratio 2s? Maybe a 1 and a 3? Before the match begins, you're already working on your strategy...

Now, the groove system; there are six basic styles of playing, which opens up for plenty of experimentation. Here's the quick summaries:

C Groove: If you've played Street Fighter Alpha 2 or 3, or Capcom vs SNK 1, you're probably fairly familiar with this. Three levels of power bar for three different strengths of super. Try cancelling a out of a level 2 super if you've got a comborific inspiration!

A Groove: Similar to a V-ism/Variable combo - on a full bar, you can activate to unleash a chain of attacks nonstop. This groove also lets you perform level 1 supers.

P Groove: Super SF2 Turbo meets SF3 - a simple super bar for a single level 3 super, and, of course, parries. With enough practice, you can deflect all moves and set the opponent up for some punishment.

S Groove: This was the King of Fighters-inspired groove also in CVS1. You can build power by holding both the fierce buttons, and launch infinite level 1 supers when you're almost out of energy. Or level 3 supers if both these conditions are met. Mind that rolling is replaced with a dodge.

N Groove: The, uh, other King of Fighters groove. Build up to three bars, 'break' one to power up, or use them as supers. Powering up before a super makes a level 3.

K Groove: Kind of an amalgamation groove - you build super by getting hit or 'just defending', which is a little similar to a parry. When it's maxxed out, your character deals extra damage and can let loose a level 3 super.

...And that's the quick summary. Between all the characters, ratios, and grooves, there's approxomately one zillion combinations you can use.

The game will probably include Arcade, Vs, Survival, Groove Edit, and Color Edit modes as seen in the PS2 and Dreamcast versions.

Rumors are also floating around that Capcom may be releasing a special fighting game controller. This may be a GameCube version of the special Capcom vs SNK fighter pad that released in Japan. And, by gum, the GameCube needs one. Still, we have no further information from Capcom.
