Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life

by Desmond Gaban - May 15, 2003, 3:14 pm EDT

The highlight of Natsume's booth is the eagerly awaited latest sequel in the Harvest Moon series. Natsume promises this latest chapter to be the very best in the series.

According to Natsume representatives, the purpose of Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life is to take the best elements of the Harvest Moon series, the farming simulation aspect and the character interaction, and take them to the next level. The game promises to contain a six chapter event system that spans 30 years of your character's life, plus tons of new additions to the farming aspect (new animals such as goats and ducks, the ability to grow hybrid vegetables, and more).

The demo at E3 unfortunately contains only a few game elements. Actual farming was not implemented yet, and a press of the start button only brings up the rucksack (other status options are unavailable in the demo). Exploring A Wonderful Life's vast world and talking to the many NPCs that appear in the game was just about the only thing we could do. Control of the main character is vastly improved from Harvest Moon's previous incarnation, Save the Homeland. However, the game lacked free-form camera movement with the C stick. Natsume has told us that the controls are not final and that they will possibly implement this feature.

We were unable to test the link-cable setup between A Wonderful Life and the Gameboy Advance game, Friends of Mineral Town.

Because of how incomplete the demo is, we could not really get an idea of how Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life will turn out, but from all the information available on the game, there is still a lot of potential for the title.
