Super Monkey Ball

by Karlie Yeung - September 29, 2001, 4:17 am EDT

Not a Cube Club game, this was tested at Computer Exchange in London.

First up was party games. Monkey Race. I selected the 4th monkey whose shirt resembled that of Diddy Kong and and the first track. The race itself is five laps round a course with speed boosts and items. The speed of the race is more akin to F-Zero than Mario Kart, those monkeys roll fast! This was the most plain out of the party games,

Monkey Fight was a battle arena. Three rounds of timed battle, with the player who falls off the least number of times winning. You have punching gloves to hit the other player off the platform and to punch open boxes of power up which fall from the sky. Power ups can make your glove bigger and extend further. Spinning the control stick whilst the glove is out spins the glove around, quite a good tactic when you have the biggest boxing glove. This is an easy game to pick up and play.

The third party game is Monkey Target. You run your monkey down a slope and take off into the air. Dials on the side of the screen give you the wind speed and direction, the altitude you are floating at and the speed. Gliding the monkey through the air you can collect bananas which are worth 20 points. The aim is to find an island to land on before you sink into the sea. Landing on a number on the island adds that many points to your score. Avoiding a dunk in the sea takes some skill.

The main game is a lot of fun, you control your monkey ball with only the left hand. Levels vary and many have no sides so if you go too fast at the wrong time, you'll fall out! The beginners mode introduces you to upward slopes, sliding platforms, steep downward slopes and other architectural obstacles. It starts off easy and then becomes more challenging and there'll be times when you are right by the goal, and fall off the floor! Banana collecting becomes second priority when you're trying not to fall off the edge. Bonus levels are nice, allowing you to add a stash of bananas to your total, making it all the faster to gain an extra life.
