Sonic Adventure 2: Battle

by Justin Wood - September 9, 2001, 5:00 pm EDT

Though not too long ago Sonic on a Nintendo system seemed impossible, Sega showed off the GameCube version of Sonic Adventure 2. Find out what Justin Wood thought of it.

It was strangely surreal to see Sega’s Sonic Adventure 2 running on the Nintendo GameCube. Only a year ago these two companies were staunch rivals. They had been rivals since the early days of console gaming after all.

Now Sega and Nintendo seem to be best friends complimenting each other every opportunity they get.

What better way for Sega to compliment Nintendo than by bringing their biggest star to the GameCube?!

As amazing as it was to see Sega’s blue mascot running around on a GameCube screen, it was clear to see that this was an incredibly early build of the game.

Don’t get me wrong. It looked okay, easily as good as the Dreamcast version, but it was very buggy. This wasn’t a surprise as the game was only 10% complete.

The two levels shown were “City Escape” and “Green Jungle”. Everything about the two levels looked and played exactly (minus the bugs) as the Dreamcast version did. It appears that things will remain that way –the same as the Dreamcast release, when the game is finally released on the GameCube. The Sega rep I spoke to said, that although he was not 100% sure, he didn’t think much of anything new would be added. I must add that his English was broken and at this time, anything is possible.

Though I’m not a big fan of Sonic Adventure 2, it will be nice to see Sega’s Sonic on Nintendo’s GameCube. The impossible is about to happen.
