Pikmin

by Karlie Yeung - September 2, 2001, 3:37 pm EDT

Listen to the general opinion, it says that Pikmin is a wonderful creation, a masterpiece by a game designer/hobbyist gardener. It is correct. Do not doubt this title.

Unexpectedly to me, Pikmin turned to my favourite game at the show. It didn't seem all that amazing to me, just a variation of a strategy game. How wrong I was.

I actually picked this game up after someone else had started, the booth attendant was kind enough to explain the progress so far. I found the controls very easy to use, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to control the cursor in front of you by walking the spaceman around.

The cursor allows you to aim your Pikmin which like the SpaceWorld build had to each be plucked out of the ground before you could control them. It did not take very long to do so and you would be quickly onto the rest of your adventures.

The first obstacle I found was a wall, I tossed a few Pikmin in that direction and went to explore the rest of the level. I found another wall. The Pikmin appear to bash their heads against the wall to pull it down, it is quite amusing watching them. In fact, all their actions including just following you around with their leaves floating along are very well animated.

I then found my first enemy. Flipping a lot of Pikmin at it helped to do the job quicker and once it ws dead you would receive disks with numbers on them. Your Pikmin will carry this back to your space ship for you and you will have to pick any new ones out of the ground. Previously called Pikmin will respond to your whistle and follow you again.

I quickly found my first space ship part and started throwing Pikmin at it. It took 25 to carry it back. Once this had finished my day ended and the Pikmin crawled up to their nests and I the spaceman went into my partially transparent rocket for the night. This would continue for 30 days, but I had to hand the controller over. I was left wanting more of this game, it went straight to the top of my list for a purchase as soon as possible.
