Wave Race: Blue Storm

by Billy Berghammer - August 24, 2001, 5:16 am EDT

Billy gets his hands on the complete version of Wave Race on GameCube. How much has it progressed since E3? Woah nellie! EAT WAKE!

Not too suprising, but the first game I played was Wave Race: Blue Storm. It was nice to finally get my hands on the final version of the game. I have one word for this title...polished.

I played 2 different levels today, and since E3, there have been many improvements and additions. The speed is one of these things. Not that I thought the E3 version was slow, but this was FAST. Plus take into consideration that it was a bit more graphically intense.

The controls seemed to be a little tighter than the version showed as E3 as well. Doing flips and barrel rolls was a lot simpler, and tricks are key because you get boosts quicker if you do tricks.

The thing I found interesting is the racers you can choose from are all the racers from 1080 and Wave Race on the N64. Very nice. A little easter egg for the people who have played these titles. Not a real big deal, but pretty damn cool.

Graphically Wave Race: Blue Storm is brilliant. The water effects are truly incredible. Riding waves never looked so good. Plus the surrounding environments were also fantastic...and of course everything is reflected perfectly on the water.

All I really can say about this game is, if you liked the original title you will absolutely love this game. I'm going back for more tomorrow, and I can't wait to get my hands on this game at launch.
