Kameo: Elements of Power

by Billy Berghammer - May 18, 2001, 4:23 pm EDT

Billy takes a stab at Rare's Kameo. Does it have what it takes to set it apart from the other GameCube titles?

At first glimpse, Kameo: Elements of Power looks a lot like Phantasy Star: Online. Very rich colors, lush environments, and expansive levels. After taking some time with it, I've come to the conclusion that it's a totally different experience, and a RPG that I'll probably purchase.

So what's the game like? Well, I played this island level where I was supposed to rid the island of all the monsters. You can transform via a hologram into 3 different monsters. There was a big Ogre type monster that could swing and punch monsters, a grasshopper who could jump extremely high, and a bat type character which would allow you to fly. You will need these characters to move around the levels a lot quicker. Kameo can move around most of the levels by walking, but to get to the tops of steep hills, or to be able to move around quickly, tranforming into these different monsters is very important.

Once I located the monsters I tried to take them out with my Ogre character. A couple swings and the baddies would fall...but it was taking a lot of time. You can also "toss out" monsters out of your pack. What this does is adds a few helpers to take out the enemies. These helpers we're huge Ogre's that would wipe out the baddies as fast as you can blink. After a few moments I took out all of the monsters with (cough) a little help from my friends.

Graphically this game was really beautiful. The environments, characters, and Monsters we're very tasty looking. The only problem with this game that I have seen so far was there was some pop up going on when I was flying around. This will hopefully be fixed before release. So far this is a beautiful RPG.

The game is only 40% complete, but from what I've seen so far, Kameo will be an excellent game. Let's hope Rare can have this title ready for release!
