GT Advance Championship Racing

Mike S finally got his GBA!!! Check out his impressions of Advance GTA.

Advance GTA is a racing game. It's realistic, using actual cars found in the real world. All the car companies, not surprisingly, are Japanese. Most of them are common in the states except for Dihatsu. You can find most of the cars here in the US too. Some of the cars have different names (I swear that the Toyota Vitz is an Echo) and some of them aren't even out in the states.

The graphics in the game are slick. I've noticed a few flaws though. The cars are pre-rendered sprites. Sometimes, when you take a turn quickly you'll see the sprite changing to depict the car turning. It's really only a minor flaw. The game has no slowdown that I can notice.

The audio is a mixed bag. The sound effects are great but the music leaves something to be desired. It's a bit bland. It fits though, I was just hoping for something more. To really judge the audio of this, or any other GBA game you have to be playing with headphones. It is with the headphones that the sound effects really rock it. When a car comes up to pass you, or when you pass a car, the buzzing of the engine can be heard on the appropriate side of your car. It really blew my mind the first time I heard it.

The play control on the game is good as well. It's nothing mind blowing but it makes very good use of the system. A is accelerate, B is brake, the pad steers, and L & R shift gears if you're using a manual transmission car. A really cool feature of the game is that different track types effect the way your car drives. I'm not sure if it actually does that, but I could swear that my cars handle different on the dirt roads.

The most notable feature of the game is that it is all in english (and a bit of engrish). The only japanese you will find in this game is the disclaimer you see on boot up. There are a few minor translation errors. When you finish a race the screen displays "This Race is Finish." But over all the Japanese did a very good job with their english. I'm giving them an A+!

The game has 48 cars total. When you first turn it on you'll have access to only 12 of them. In order to get the new ones you'll have to be good. From what I've played so far it would seem that when you finish a race (you have to place at least 3rd to finish) you get a part upgrade. When you finish in first place you get a new car, sometimes. I haven't played long enough to completely understand the rewards system.

Advance GTA is an importer's dream. It is a totally fantastic game. The graphics really show off what the GBA can do with MODE-7. The sound is good and the play control is tight. Overall, this has got to be one of the top games to import.
