GoldenEye 007

While the game won't have the original level design, the multiplayer definately feels like the classic.

Just to be clear, the new Goldeneye 007 is a brand new game. It is heavily inspired and has a ridiculous number of homages to the original, but the content is new. I spent countless nights playing multiplayer with my friends on the N64 Goldeneye, and the new title's multiplayer has a very similar feel.

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

The level on display was called Archives, and I participated in a couple of matches of 4 player split-screen deathmatch. Weapons availble included the trusty AK-47, the P99 pistol, and grenades. The demo was using the Classic Controller Pro and gameplay felt very solid using it. Using a familar FPS layout, The ZR button was the gun trigger, and aiming was controlled with the right analog stick.

The game honestly controlled, looked, and felt a lot like Rare's title. When a player dies, blood drips down the screen, and when a match is over the game gives each player accolades like Most Deadly. The Archives map looked a lot like the 64 map of the same name with a different layout. There were a few hallways and staircases to run around, and a good amount of boxes and things to duck behind. The playable characters included Jaws, Oddjob, and Trevelyan.

Unlike the original, Oddjob can throw his hat using the R button. Graphically, the game is a bit weak. It actually looks a little too much like the original. While the game didn't really seem to be doing anything new for an FPS, it certainly feels like Goldeneye.

Classic Controller? There had better be Wii control options or else this game is a waste of time.

noname2200June 15, 2010

Classic Controller, eh?  Not sure what to think...hype decreasing?

ShyGuyJune 15, 2010

If it has support for both then it will be EPIC

I'm probably the only person in the world who never gave two fucks about Goldeneye's multiplayer.  To me the game was brilliant because of the single player.  Deathmatches have never been my cup of tea.  Maybe I'm too artistic.  I like to see the world the developers have created.  Shooting your friends doesn't involve that.

Plus one doesn't always have friends over.  I consider the single player mode to the be the "true" game and the multiplayer is mindless fun for when your friends are over.  If a game has poor single player, it's a poor game.

Multiplayer is presented in four-player splitscreen or eight-player online, with an experience points system that unlocks perks. Maps will be drawn from familiar locations, but the layouts will not be the same as they were in the Nintendo 64 version of the game. After watching the dam level, I was able to play a round of four-player split screen. In the mode we played, the first player to 10 kills won. I got seven and found the gameplay to be smooth. I used a Wii Remote and Nunchuk set-up which used the pointer to aim and mapped a melee move to a shake of the Nunchuk (probably will be changed to a button press, I was told). Other players used the Wii Classic Controller Pro.

It pretty much has to, doesn't it?  Not everyone has a Classic Controller, and I don't think any game has made it mandatory.  The question is, what harm will result to the IR controls from this?

I hope this proves the inferior nature of dual stick controls for FPS games FOREVER.

How about a 3D remake of the original N64 title?

No.

The original was 3D.  And to be honest, it hasn't aged as well as you'd think.

Yes, I blame ,yself for not being explicit, but with Nintendo remaking all these N64 they might as well remake Golden Eye 007. I would rather have this as a FPS for the 3DS than the wiimake that was just revealed.

So... is Solitare a better game than... well, virtually any other card or board game ever?

The first time I heard of Goldeneye 007 was when my friend Bret Reid invided me over to a mutual friends house, Jason Scott, after school and we played multi for like 3 hours with quick hot wings breaks in between every other match.

After that first experience, i was like a crack adict in withdrawal. That very weekend I had the usual video game sleep over at my cousins house and I insisted the Rented Game of the Week be Goldeneye. I forgot the circumstances but somehow we can only play the game with a horribly worn n torn SNES RF modulator, so the experience was incredibly blurry. Also, in my excitement I forgot that at the time I only had ONE N64 controller, so once we rented the game, walked back to his apt, hooked up the 64, taped the RD mod to the tv so that we had the least amount of static possible and popped in the game.. I realized there'd be no multiplayer that night. Only then did I discover the wonder of its Single player, but soon after I ran out and bought the game plus a blue n64 controller, and rumble pak, and the goldeneye parties commenced..

ahh, nostalgia<3

I have but one thing to say...

If there is no grenade launcher, this is no Goldeneye.

any word on Gamecube controller support?

No, not at all.

The thing is Goldeneye, and practically every FPS, is more dumbed down and simplified in multiplayer.  It's just hunt around for your friends and shoot them.  It's mindless so I don't find it that stimulating.  In single player you have to avoid being seen my cameras and fulfill mission objectives to succeed.  It isn't just shooting.  It has more depth and that's why I prefer it.

With something like Street Fighter II I love the multiplayer because it's pretty much the same experience, only against a human being instead of an AI.  But with Goldeneye it isn't like that.  It isn't like I, James Bond, have to succeed at my mission, only the guards are now REAL PEOPLE.  HOLY SHIT!  It's just this watered down version of Goldeneye's gameplay.

It should be noted that I had at the time of the game's release played the shit out of Wolfenstein, Doom and Duke 3D.  So the thrill of shooting people from a first person perspective had gotten stale.  Goldeneye's single player provided variety to the formula.  I think Goldeneye's status as a console game added to it's appeal as console-only gamers were suddenly getting into what PC gamers had played for years.  The multiplayer of Goldeneye is unexceptional for the time it was released but the single player is groundbreaking, whether you played on PCs or consoles.

Ian, did you ever play the counter-op in Perfect Dark? It sounds like exactly what you'd want in multiplayer in a FPS; it's the same as the single player, except the other player plays as the enemies in the stage.

I did.  I also enjoyed the co-op mode.  Though I think the frame rate wasn't so hot during those modes because I don't remember playing them as much as single player.  I can't remember.
