Gainesville, Florida Launch Report

by Mike Sklens - November 18, 2001, 7:41 am EST

Mike S camped out all day yesterday to get his GameCube! Check out what he did there.

I knew I was going to camp out at my local Wal-Mart to get my GameCube. Originally I had planned to get there around 7pm. But, I stopped by there early to see how the line was forming and there was already a guy there at 10am. So, I decided to run home and get my stuff. I came back around 1, and there was a 2nd person there by now. The two guys, Ralph and Jon, were REALLY cool. Jon is a HUGE Earthbound fan and he does work for Starman.net.

So, for a while there it was just us. Eventually more people showed up. I met some more friends (JP and Mike). A bunch of us decided to break out our GBAs and have us some fun with Mario Kart Super Circuit. Now, if you haven't played MKSC with 4 people, you are missing something great. This game is a total blast with 3 other people.

Some of the guys were at the PS2 launch last there and they said there were some problems with the people there. So, in order to keep things orderly we drafted up a list of everyone in line. The store had 42 units to give away. But in the end, there weren't any problems. Actually, we only had to turn about 3 people away because the line was full.

There were some big problems though. Our Wal-Mart didn't get ANY extra Nintendo controllers. They had 3 InterAct SuperPads, and that was it. Also, they had put the memory cards out early and by mid afternoon they were all sold out. So, we did a little shopping around. Thankfully, everyone was cool and we were holding places in line while other people went to other stores. A bunch of us got controllers and memory cards at Target (which is right near the Wal-Mart).

When the clock struck 12:01 I was down right giddy. Ralph was the first to get his system and after getting it he let out a loud "YEAH!" and Jon and I followed suit with our own yells after getting our GameCubes. So, after 11 hours of camping out for the GameCube, I finally had it. I ran home right away and plugged that baby into my big screen TV. And, after about an hour and a half of Luigi, Wave Race, Rogue Leader, and Monkey Ball, I went to sleep.
