Sega has released a trailer for a follow-up to Sonic Generations, announced for platforms including the Nintendo NX. UPDATED with a statement from the producer.

Friday night during the Sonic 25th Anniversary Party, Sega revealed a new 3D Sonic game, known simply as Project Sonic 2017. The published teaser trailer is an edited cutscene that shows "Classic" and "Modern" Sonic teaming up. It appears that the new game is taking cues from Sonic Generations, a version of which came out for the 3DS in 2011. Notably, the trailer includes NX in the list of platforms at the end of the video, and Nintendo of America retweeted the reveal from the official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter profile.

This announcement adds to the body of evidence suggesting that NX will have capabilities at a minimum on par with PS4 and Xbox One.

UPDATE: During a Q&A with the game's producer Takashi Iizuka streamed after the trailer, he confirmed that the project is not a direct sequel to Sonic Generations.

Cue the siren!

People liked Generations, though maybe my impression comes from somewhat-forgiving Sonic fans. As always, I hope this next one is good!

Bring back Pele the Beloved Dog.

It almost looks like there are three Eggman (Eggmen?) in the trailer. You know who the third one would be, right?

Generations was the last good Sonic game. I can only hope this is an ok game.

Is this the first officially announced NX game?  That would be an interesting historical note: Sega beat Nintendo to it.

Anyway, Generations was fun, but pretty short (unless you try S-ranking all the dull or irritating filler missions).  I hope this improves the formula.

Not quite. Zelda: Wild and Crazy Kids was confirmed for the NX.  But even then, there have been others.

Well I'm glad this is coming to NX. Watch it end up the hand held lesser version that NX gets.

Well back to the boostics I guess. I think the modern gameplay is pretty cool but auto boost is just so lame. At the end of Generations modern Sonic teaches classic Sonic how to do the boost and in this trailer it looks like he's finally fingered it out. :@

With Sonic Mania coming around one has to wonder why we are getting classic Sonic in this game with that need being upheld fully by Mania. I forgot who but someone at Sega said this wasn't a sequel to generations, lol. Yeah right, but if thats true in a gameplay sense then maybe classic Sonic's auto boost, Sonic Mania and this comment mean that classic Sonic will be handled a little differently this time around. Like his gameplay will feel more like controlling and actual character like in the adventure games as apposed to a speeding car like in Unleashed and beyond.

I hope we don't get too much 2D sections with modern Sonic. I don't like the 2D sections in Colors, Lost World, Galaxy or Galaxy 2. Jumping from platform to platform just doesn't feel as natural in those games as it does in the full 2D games.

Also I understand Sonic Mania not coming to NX just yet since they've only got like 10 people making that game but later on Nintendo's non-3DS systems better get it!
