Celebrate Duck Hunt's Smash Bros. appearance by playing the game that started it all.

The NES classic Duck Hunt is coming to Wii U Virtual Console according to today's Nintendo Direct.

Originally made 30 years ago in 1984, Duck Hunt is a light gun game where you shoot down ducks and clay discs. If you fail, a dog laughs at you. That dog along with a duck are playable in Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and 3DS.

The Wii U Virtual Console version will be specially made to work with the Wii Remote, so you can mimic the experience of using the NES Zapper back in the day.

I'm kind of surprised Nintendo isn't also releasing an absurdly expensive NES Zapper-styled Wii Remote shell to go along with Duh Cunt.

Duck Hunt is eh, now add Wild Gunman and then we're talking.

I hope this is an indication that we'll see Yoshi's Safari eventually.

Glad they are putting effort into this. The last Zapper game they put on the Virtual Console was "Operation Wolf" and made you play it with a d-pad.

Cool, I guess. Now, let's talk Metal Combat...

I wonder if there will be a cursor on the screen, though I s'pose most of the challenge with this game was not having a cursor. Still, it might be harder to tell where the Wiimote is pointing than the Zapper, especially since the Wiimote is using the IR light from the sensor bar and not feedback from the TV image itself.

For the record - this has been able to be perfectly (and I do mean *perfectly*) emulated on NES emulators for Wii Since September 6th, 2008. ;) Using the Wiimote as a zapper is every bit as fun as it sounds.  The emulator puts a little 8-bit, red cursor on the screen. AND you can turn it off if you want to be super hardcore!
