A new multiplayer option is here!

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will support up to eight players battling at once.

While this is great news, there are some drawbacks. When playing with more than four players, the number of selectable stages does drop. Also, more than four players at once will not be supported online.

I'd imagine this requires the GameCube adapter.

- 1 gamepad
- combo of 7 Wiimote+ w/attachments (Nunchuck, Classic Controller, CC Pro) or Wii UPro Controller
- up to 8 3DS or Gamecube controllers

So no, it's possible to do it entirely wirelessly.

Ah, I see. I didn't know Wii U could handle more than 4 regular controllers.

I didn't know it could either. Lasts night while watching the direct I assumed you either had to have a GameCube adapter or use 3DSes, but then today I saw this

I've wanted this since the Wii reveal back in 2006, but at this point I don't think I could get that many players without online.

I'm super excited for 8 player smash!

I am in the same boat, I left all my friends behind in Nevada so now I have nobody to play these games local with. There was a game store in town that had Smash tournaments every week but I wasn't good enough for that.
