New 3DS LL Greatly Outsells New 3DS in Japan

Looks like face plates don't beat screen size.

Thanks to sales figures published by Famitsu, we can now see that the vast majority of Japanese gamers have picked screen size over face plates.

Over the course of the systems launch weekend, the standard sized New 3DS sold 61,151 units while the larger New 3DS LL managed to sell a whopping 172,332 units. That's nearly three times the sales of the standard New 3DS.

When Nintendo announced the New 3DS and New 3DS LL, it was revealed that only the New 3DS would feature interchangeable face plates. The New 3DS also features a redesigned form factor (similar to the original 3DS XL) and a larger screen than the original 3DS. These things combined made many assume that the New 3DS would outsell its larger counterpart. It would seem however that in this case, it really is the size that matters.

I think that number my be misleading if others are in a situation like Famicomplicated.  They are sold out of all the units by my understanding.

i like the faceplates allot, but once you go big you can't go back to being small.

Eh, every time I use my old launch day 3DS (ie, my fiancées 3DS) I kind of like not having the defects of the low screen resolution shoved in my face.  But then I remember that I even more like being able to play my 3DS for more than 15 min without crippling hand pain (though size isn't directly related to that, DSL is still the most comfortable handheld I've played).  So I'd go with the LL but wish I didn't need to.

The visual difference is a decent point, but with the resolution in play the screens don't look that good at either size. I don't find it sufficiently worse to be a significant factor.

At least it isn't the DSi XL. All of the horrors of DS polygonal graphics, now stretched to a screen 4x the original size.
