Your 3DS has never looked fancier.

An update to the Nintendo 3DS System Menu has been released, which adds new features such as themes and pop-out notifications.

The new theme options are located in the upper left Home Screen icon, where the brightness and power-saving mode options currently reside. Some themes simply change the color of the Home Screen. Available pre-installed options include Red, Pink, Blue, Yellow, and Black. In addition, premium themes can be purchased from the eShop. The paid themes include:

  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds - $1.99
  • Mario: Felt-Stamped Characters - $1.99
  • Mario: Wood-Burned Characters - $1.99
  • Hanafuda - $1.99
  • Mighty Mushrooms - $1.99
  • Spotlight: Yoshi - $1.99
  • Spotlight: Peach - $1.99
  • Spotlight: Luigi - $1.99
  • Spotlight: Mario - $1.99
  • NES: Jumping Mario - $1.99

In addition to the character-based themes, a number of pattern-based themes are available for cheaper:

  • Stars: Gold & Black - $0.99
  • Polka Dots: Gold & White - $0.99
  • Polka Dots: Black & White - $0.99
  • Stripes: Black & White - $0.99
  • Checkerboard: Black & White - $0.99

Another feature added is pop-out notifications. This feature shows you an incoming SpotPass notification over the Home Screen the first time it is received. If you want to view the notification again, you can open the Notifications app as usual.

Take a look at the video below if you want to see the system update in action.

Paid themes are you kidding me. What other stupid crap are they gonna ask us to pay for?

'ey, we worked hard slapping a bunch of tacky polka dots on everything and it's only fair we get $0.99 in return,'

Oh and the fact that the icon borders aren't the same color as the 3ds cart icon is kinda annoying.

Hey, did you asked Nintendo to catch up to competition? There you go, DLCs and paid skins.

so we deserve this stuff for wanting a unified account system (a fucking standard for every digital online store in this day and age) or decent online? Don't think that's how that works,

Baby steps. ;)

Genuinely good new feature that isn't mentioned in the article is ability to take screenshots directly from Home screen.

Obviously it's made to show off your new themes (SO PWETTY! BUY IT RIGHT NOW!), but you can also use it boast about your games collection on 3DS.

So we now have 5 concurrent stores running at the moment:
Wii Shop Channel
DSi Shop
3DS Shop
WiiU Shop
3DS Theme Shop

Personally I hope they make a all-you-can-eat VC shop for WiiU with a subscription.

Its optional and cost less then $5. I'm not seeing whats wrong with it. All of them look pretty detailed too. I wasn't expecting them to actually change the folder icon.

AdrockOctober 07, 2014

Wait, the 3DS eshop is separate from the 3DS theme shop? That's weird.

I don't really care about Nintendo charging for skins because I won't buy any. I'd consider using Club Nintendo coins for one. I have over 900 coins just sitting there and a bunch of codes still waiting to be registered (I'm mainly waiting for Wii U VC games). I like being able to change the color of the folders.

...on the Wii U menu. I wish you could do that on 3DS.

They are there for those who want to make their 3DS unique. I'm with you, I don't want them, but if it makes Nintendo money, hey no money lost for me.

Keep on dreaming. Maybe by 2020.

Don't forget that Street Plaza games are also in their separate sort of shop with a salesman rabbit.

Oh and i guess i will show off mine Home menu:

I looked over themes and some were nice (Hanafuda theme was really tempting, especially with it's music), but i suppressed the urge.

Not a fan of paying for them, but I'll throw $2 to Nintendo for the Zelda theme.  Would have preferred a classic LoZ theme, but I'll take this.

Art_de_CatOctober 07, 2014

I bought the ALBW one, and really enjoying it.  Kinda wish it didn't cost $2.  But compared to the other themes, it was worth it.

I switched to the blue to go with my blue 3DS. I ain't buying any themes, but I might get one if Club Nintendo were to offer them.

The folders do change colour with the theme at least. Not what you wanted, but still something.

This update also updated the look of the default OS, and seems faster now.

Same with eShop on 3DS. Before that you couldn't even exit eShop until it downloads icons or something (?). Yesterday i pressed Home from eShop and it exited immediately.

I like the Link Between Worlds theme, but not for $2.00.
