Bayonetta 2 Retail Copies Include Original Game, Out in Fall 2014

Platinum's Wii U exclusive sequel also comes with Nintendo character themed costumes. UPDATE: The original game appears to be bundled-in only for physical copies.

UPDATE: Nintendo's E3 Game Site for Bayonetta 2 currently states that the original game will be "packed in with the purchase of every retail packaged version of Bayonetta 2." This highly suggests that players who opt to download the sequel will NOT be treated to a free copy of the original game as well.

Additionally, the game's description from the same source reveals a little more about the "Tag Climax" multiplayer mode, where players can play co-op missions and be rewarded based on their game performance compared to their partner's. This mode is described as requiring an online connection.

Original Story:

Bayonetta 2 will come with the entire first game included, Nintendo has revealed during their E3 Digital Event. Since the original was not present on Nintendo systems, this gives players of the sequel (a Wii U exclusive) a chance to experience the entirety of the franchise when it comes out this Fall.

The end of the game's trailer also revealed some branded levity: Nintendo character costumes for the titular character. The trailer revealed a Princess Peach costume (with themed attacks where what appear to be Bowser's disembodied fists or feet strike out from portals a la the game's special attacks), a Link costume, and even a costume based on Metroid heroine Samus Aran in her trademark power suit.

Seems like a good deal to me, I may actually buy it this fall

SorenJune 10, 2014

Note: this only applies for the retail version. The eShop version will not have Bayonetta 1.

This is a smart move, it should help the game along.

StratosJune 10, 2014

Glad to hear the first will be included. More developers should do this in one form or another. Games like Arkham Asylum and the older Assassins Creed games could easily be ported over and even just released digitally for a fair enough price.

AdrockJune 10, 2014

I was hoping this would happen. At the very least, I was expecting an e-shop release of the first Bayonetta. I'm glad it's included. That's pretty much convinced me to get this sooner. I was going to wait until the game dropped to $20.

I wonder if the eShop will sell each game by itself - perhaps 1 for $10 or such and 2 for $50.  If you've played the first, you can just download the second and save $10.  If you're not sure about dropping $50/$60 on the game, you can download the first for cheap as a bit of a demo.

motangJune 10, 2014

How cool is that it comes with the first game! I have the first game for the PS3, and won't mind playing it again on the Wii U!

ejamerJune 10, 2014

E3 preorder deals in Canada from FutureShop and BestBuy had Bayonetta 2 sitting at about $45.  I placed an order... but was a bit hesitant since I've never played the original game. Finding out that the first game is thrown in makes that deal seem more like a steal though. What a great way to add value for Wii U owners!

Nintendo's E3 website, which says it will be only for the retail release of the game.

As part of the Digital-Only Master Race, I'm very upset that they're not including it with that version. It doesn't make sense, doing it there would be easier, cheaper, and more profitable than a retail release.

StratosJune 11, 2014

Gotta wonder if it is a shot at attempting to restore retail faith in the system. Shelf space is a big deal for the average consumer's mind share. Making it retail only could boost physical sales and in turn cause retailers to stock more Nintendo product, giving them mind share. Course, they need to do it with more than one or two games for it to work.

RazorkidJune 12, 2014

If they don't include this deal with the digital version, it will be the first physical I've bought for WiiU since launch. It sucks, but I can make this exception for Bayo.

azekeJune 12, 2014

According to Nintend's instagram we WILL get Bayo 1 if we buy digital version.

StratosJune 13, 2014

Says the link doesn't exist. Though I will be happy for the digital crowd if it turns out to be true.

ejamerJune 13, 2014

Apparently (and until things are really finalized, take this with a grain of salt) buying Bayonetta 2 in either physical or digital form will get you a bonus download code for a digital version of Bayonetta 1.

So cool news for everyone because we get a free game!
Probably better news for digital fans since it appears there will be no physical release of the original Bayonetta.

Gotta admin that this is very disappointing for me - I'd much rather have physical than digital for a number of reasons, and if it were possible to put both games on one disc that would be AWESOME. Oh well... hard to be upset about a "free" game regardless of the format.

BlackNMild2k1June 13, 2014

They should do this for Xenoblade Chronicles X too. I would be much more inclined to purchase the game sooner if the original game also came with it.

StratosJune 13, 2014

HD Xenoblade would be fantastic.

They would probably try to sell it though. I still hope they release a Pikmin 1 & 2 HD + New Play Controls for the U...and a Prime Trilogy HD.

BlackNMild2k1June 13, 2014

They should do this kind of stuff for lots of games. eShop promotion and sales boost.

Buy the new Donkey Kong game Tropical Freeze, register the game to your linked MyNintendo acct and get an automatic 50% discount on ALL Donkey Kong Country VC games and a 25% discount on previous DKC game (DKC: Returns)*.

*good for 45 days from registered date. promotion ends 8/31/14.

StratosJune 14, 2014

I remember we used to get some very awesome pre-order bonuses like Ocarina of Time/Master Quest on Gamecube for Wind Waker and Rogue Leader demo disc with first levels and the old arcade games. They should restart that trend.

StratosJune 14, 2014

How about a discount on the previous game's HD version if you registered the original on Club Nintendo? That way if a new Pikmin or Prime collection is released we are given a "loyalty bonus".
