Stay on target. Stay on target.

Retailer Target has discounted the Wii U Basic Set to $239.99, a 20% discount off its normal price of $299.99.

The Wii U Basic Set is white, comes with 8GB of internal storage, and does not include a copy of Nintendo Land.

While the Deluxe unit is still being sold at its original price of $349.99, a bundle with a copy of New Super Mario Bros U is on sale for $390, a saving of $20.

At what price point does the basic become the better deal.
I'm thinking I would have bought Nintendo Land either way, but I'd prefer it digitally.
I love the Deluxe digital promotion cause I buy all my games digitally so that's worth something.
I don't care about the stand cause I never use it and I bought energizer rechargable battery packs that come with their own charging cradle that also charges the GamePad so that's no added value.
8GB vs 32GB is meaningless since I bought a 2TB hard drive.
All in all, I'd say Nintendo Land disc is worth $30 to me (if someone offered me $35 for it I'd sell and buy it on the eShop) and I'll probably get $60 worth in eShop credit (between launch day of the Wii U and December 2014 when the program expires) from the Deluxe Digital Promotion so $350-$90=$260
If I could do it over again I'd buy this for $240 over a Deluxe for $350.

the black color alone is worth the price

Why? Retailers do sales all the time, it's not a big deal. Hell, Amazon will often have brand new games like 10% off on launch day.

Too bad the Deluxe isn't the one on sale, or else I might be tempted...

TrueNerdMay 22, 2013

Oh baby, I AM tempted. The only question is, how badly am I gonna want to download retail games? That 10% back is a pretty sweet deal with the Deluxe. Or do I just wait for the official price drop that looks more and more likely with each month's NPD reports?

$110 dollar difference?  If you don't care about the deluxe digital promotion, grab the basic set.

If you plan to download from eShop, you will eventually need an external USB storage drive regardless of 8GB or 32GB sets.

If you really want a black Wii U, purchase a black decal skin for (approx $25).

I would be extremely surprised if I didn't get well over $110 in DDP codes by the end of it. I'm already over halfway there.

Buy this and download the Rayman app, you'll be set.

No deal. Deluxe or nothing for me. :P  8)

I'm definitely not a fan of the Basic Set at $300. This sale, however, is a good price. If you don't have a Wii U yet and don't mind white (or that the analog sticks on the GamePad will yellow with time and use), there's never been a better time. Join the Dark Side. All of you.

I think pretty much anyone getting a Wii U just jump to the Deluxe.  That $50 seems to not deter so they are trying to move the Basic stock thats just piling up.

MagicCow64May 23, 2013

I might do this today. I woke up with a little demon in my brain trying to convince me it's a good idea. I don't really care about the stuff in the Deluxe version and white is fine with me. I'm going to roll the dice and stop by Brooklyn Target after work to see if they have any in stock.

What games are you getting Magic Cow?

Not positive. I'm about to head over. I mean, if I pull the trigger on this I'll probably start off with NSMBU because there's no way I won't play that at some point, and I will put time into it.

Other than that, I'm interested in ZombiU, AC III, and Lego City as far as retail goes, but I don't want to pay $60 for any of them. If they have anything interesting for $20 or whatever, I might grab something random. I feel so excited and scared!

Good news, AC III is $40 and Lego City is $50 at Target.

Also Toys R Us is having a buy 1 get 1 40% off sale.

I did it! I'm fiddling while Rome is burning!

So the Brooklyn Target did not have the sale listed, but they do price matching with the website. I had to go to the "service" desk and wait in line for 20 minutes while people tried to return opened paper towels and whatnot, but I eventually bought the console at the $239.99 price. I consider this okay because if Nintendo does a discount, I suspect it will be to a $300 consolidated SKU with most of the deluxe features, so this target deal will still have been worth it. If they drop the basic to $250 in the fall or something, then, eh, still ten bucks cheaper and months with the unit.

Picked up NSMBU and AC III, which was on sale for $30 and hard to say no to. This was actually the cheapest Wii U game they had. If anyone wants in on that, I recommend checking out your local target.

That's not a sale, they are just including a $25 gift card when you buy a Wii U Deluxe. This happens all the time for systems and games. For example, Best Buy is giving a $25 gift card with the purchase of two select games: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcmcat303900050020&type=category
