Swashbuckling adventures and hood wearing awaits!

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag has been officially confirmed to be hitting the Wii U.

The new installment in the popular franchise takes place in the beginning of the 1800s. You play as former British privateer, now pirate, Edward Kenway, who happens to be the grandfather of Connor from Assassin's Creed III. Players will embark on a journey spanning as many as 50 locations in the Caribbean along with three cities: Havana, Nassau and Kingston.  Naval combat will play a big role in Black Flag and ships will be upgradeable along with Kenway.

The new game is looking to be a massive one, as shown by the eight developers working on it. No release date has been announced.

Talkback

Interesting they are going right for a numbered release instead of milking spinoffs.

OblivionMarch 04, 2013

Because Connor sucks.

Yeah, the most surprising thing here is that they're jumping straight to IV with a subtitle to boot. Even though this game jumps back in the timeline. My guess is that they want to go with an increasing number every year to drive enthusiasm. But given that this is now outside the "trilogy," why not just go with a spin-off subtitle? I guess they don't want to split the brand into different "types"?

Could this reflect an industry shift? GTAV should basically be San Andreas II, for instance. The Halo side games didn't seem to do much for the brand, also.

Wait, IV starts in the 1800s. Wouldn't that make the main character Connor's grandson, not grandfather? Doesn't III take place during the American Revolution? Isn't that around 1776? Admittedly, I have only played about the first hour of III so far. I'm on the Boat! Also, I am not American.

Wait, IV starts in the 1800s.

Must be a typo, the game is set in 1715.

That makes more sense.
I'll wager the article's author meant to say beginning of the 18th century, not 1800s. Trips 'em up every time.

Kinda disappointed that their hasn't been a black assassin, but with a name like "Black Flag", the internet would have been ruthless.

OblivionMarch 05, 2013

What about the Vita Assasin's creed? She was a black protagonist.
