A new 3DS XL model with a transparent casing? Color us interested.

A transparent Nintendo 3DS XL prototype was shown off in the Iwata Asks for the 3DS XL.

The transparent casing was the demo model for the new system. The model was used to help show the new system's inner workings during the segment.

The 3DS XL comes out on July 28 in Japan and Europe, and August 19 in North America.

I remember back in the day when I had a invisible n64 controller. That was pretty cool

I don't think they've done a transparent portable since...the GB Color, maybe?  Or were there some GBA Originals?

My original GBA is a transparent blue.

Tybo68July 24, 2012

Amazing! I am instantly reminded of my game boy pocket that I had way back when that was similar.

My brother had a transparent "fuschia" GBA. It was a thing of beauty.

Transparency is always a good thing, whether it be in government or in gaming.

Speaking of transparency, I wish they would bring back Crystal Pepsi. :(

At least you can see exactly where the second Circle Pad wouldn't go (not that they couldn't miniaturize other components).

Chozo GhostJuly 24, 2012

They could have made the whole thing thicker and that way both the battery and circle pad could have existed in the same spot (one on top of the other). Some people prefer handhelds to be thicker anyway, because it gives more to grab onto which is more ergonomic.

They could have done a lot of things. As Aaron said, they could have made it fit if they'd wanted to, they just don't want to.

If you want a handheld with a second analog, buy a Vita, because Nintendo's not going to give you one.

But the Vita doesn't have any games. Nintendo will give me one eventually, but I may have to wait until the 4DS.

DiscostewJuly 25, 2012

They may have been able to add that 2nd circle pad, but without that matching pair of extra shoulder buttons, wouldn't that just leave the problem as-is instead of solving it?

The Vita has a pretty decent library considering it only came out 5 months ago. I've got 10 games for mine, although I suppose I've got a reputation for going overboard in that regard.

I loved my transparent GBA.  It reminds me of the old cord-phones that were transparent and showcased in every teenage girl's bedroom... yay for nostalgia?!  I will buy this if it comes with a neon turquoise wind-breaker.

I wish all my electronics were transparent. Like even the screens and shit. I want to see right through if I want to.

A transparent espresso machine would be sick.

Ian SaneJuly 25, 2012

It's interesting to look at this and thnk of it as retro.  Transparent videogame systems or accessories are totally a thing from my high school and college days.  I never really noticed when this trend disappeared.  It's only now when I see this thing that I realize how long it has been.

I like it.  They always offer handhelds in lots of colours so why not make this one of them?
