The latest firmware enables Facebook functionality for your DSi.

During Nintendo's E3 press conference, the company revealed that they were planning to allow DSi owners to upload pictures taken with the DSi cameras onto their Facebook account directly from their DSis. The firmware upgrade enables that promised functionality and also increases image display speeds within the DSi Camera application. This firmware was released on July 29th in Japan and July 30th in the PAL territories.

To take advantage of this functionality, a Facebook account is required. Once logged into a Facebook account, pictures can be uploaded, which are saved in an album titled, "Nintendo DSi Pictures" on Facebook. This album acts like any other album on the social networking service and can be viewed by friends and families from their computers. Uploaded pictures can only be deleted from within the main Facebook interface, normally accessed via computer.

A secondary function of the new firmware is anti-piracy measures. The update blocks all known DSi-compatible flashcards.

The firmware update is required to use the Nintendo DSi Shop. To download this update, select Firmware Update from the Hardware Settings in the DSi menu.

The Nintendo DSi browser has also received an update, with an official identification of "Opera 9.50/507." The browser now takes up three fewer data blocks than the original version and seems to run slightly faster.

Currently, it is unknown when Nintendo will release the firmware upgrade in the Americas. The next batch of DSiWare arrives on Monday, August 3rd, but any prediction as to whether or not this will be its release date is pure speculation.
