Fils-Aime says a big game and a smash hit for the holidays will be announced at E3.

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed the company has big plans for the second half of 2008, but don't expect to hear about them until E3.

Speaking with Geoff Keighley of Game Trailers TV on what Nintendo plans for the rest of 2008, Reggie was his usual cryptic self.

"We're gonna unveil the whole second half during E3,” Reggie said. “I mean come on, there's more than enough to get people excited."

Reggie was further pressed for the usual goods. What does the future hold for Mario and Zelda in 2008?

"I'll tell you this, we're gonna have great new content maximizing of all our key franchises,” he said. “It's gonna be a good second half. There's gonna be a big game for the holidays that the gamers will want."

Reggie was confident that Nintendo would satisfy casual and hardcore gamers alike.

"Gamers are gonna be excited, and the expanded audience is going to be excited," he said.

Talkback

walkingdead2March 18, 2008

i smell and ice climbers sequel... or maybe balloon fight.

mastroMarch 18, 2008

I really hope its pikmin 3 but I dunno if Nintendo would classify it as a Big game. I am about 90% sure its animal crossing though with them launching their pay to play service and making more money on selling virtual chairs and dressers. It could obviously be both games though so thats what I am hoping for.

Michael8983March 18, 2008

My predictions:

- PIKMIN 3

This one is a given. The only surprise is we HAVEN'T seen it yet.

- ANIMAL CROSSING

Another given.

- MARIO PARTY 9

Even more of a given. Let's just hope this one steps it up.

- Nintendogs for Wii

A Wii version of the DS MEGA-HIT seems inevitable to me.
The Wii-mote will allow for a new dimension of puppy-interactivity. I also suspect it will have online features as well as the ability to swap your puppy between your Wii and DS.

- KIRBY!!!

That Kirby game that was supposed to have been on the Gamecube is sure to find new life on the Wii.
I suspect it's arriving much later than Paper Mario and Barrel Blast simply because they're taking more care to make it a true Wii experience. I hope.

- POKEMON RPG

It won't be the MMORPG that people are hoping for and will never get but I think a REAL Pokemon RPG with online elements is coming late this year.

- SUPER MARIO GALAXY pt 2

Ok this seems far-fetched but hear me out. Without spoiling anything the game does drop a major hint that this is coming.
The engine is too good not to get more use out of and as amazing as the first one was there is so much more untapped potential.
I think we've only just begun to see what Mario's Galaxy has to offer and a part two is right around the corner.

...Am I the only one taking this with a giant grain of salt?

While I did expect Nintendo to reveal the rest of their lineup at E3 I don't expect anything extraordinary.

I'm being cynical, but I've been burned by executive talk so much that any promises of something great makes me raise my brow.

KDR_11kMarch 18, 2008

What's with that E3 obsession anyway, you'll just risk getting drowned out by all the announcements other people make.

RABicleMarch 18, 2008

Oh cool, Pokémon Opal, for DS.

It'll be like Pearl and Diamond but you'll be able to do random online battles and battle tower will be expanded, also teh underground wont suck.

DasmosMarch 18, 2008

Like pap, I'm not going to get too excited until I see anything. Although a Pikmin sequel or a F-Zero installment would be nice.

Well, we know one is Kd Icarus.  I'm guessing the big holiday title is Animal Crossing.

animecyberratMarch 18, 2008

I predict Mario Party 9, online but you have to pay to play online. Nintendo will make it sound like we "want" to pay to play Mario Party online because of all the bitching we did about GC not being online. Somehow they will spin it to sound like a good think.

i would say so... didn't you see where i was speculating about ice climbers!!!  how can you not be excited... ohhh i cant wait to be let down.

Ian SaneMarch 18, 2008

I don't like to get my hopes up because it just risks getting burned.  Executives obviously are biased when making such statements.  Why would they ever sell their own product short?  Everything is the greatest product in the universe.

Though I still can't help get a little bit excited and it's because of SSB Brawl.  It's an amazing game and that's gotten me in a really "NINTENDO YEAH!!" mood, and it's been too long since I've been in that mood.  Things will die down but I am very curious.  I don't want to be excited but I am.

EnnerMarch 18, 2008

I'm hoping for a new IP game. Nintendo and more sequels go hand in hand, but, given what Reggie said, it might sound like Nintendo has something new and big to show. Well, better not get my hopes too high.

NinGurl69 *hugglesMarch 18, 2008

You can't get more hardcore YET CASUAL-FRIENDLY than a game starring REGGIE himself.

nickmitchMarch 18, 2008

If the "gamers" and the "expanded audience" are both supposed to be happy, then I sure hope their not expecting to do both with the same title. I'm just hoping that the "gamers" are getting some kind of fan service to enjoy while the "expanded audience" gets a dumbed down version of Animal Crossing.

NinGurl69 *hugglesMarch 18, 2008

AC with lower interest rates and foreclosure protection, eh.

I don't think Animal Crossing will be dumbed down, not with the way Wild World sold (and continues to sell) in Japan.

NinGurl69 *hugglesMarch 18, 2008

ahahahaha new Nintendo-speak floating around.

"bridge" games, games that bridge the gap between core traditional gamers and expanded casual non-gamers, like Mario Kart, and, uhhhh Contra IV

Animal Crossing is a given. Plus, there will be a Star Fox if there's no F-Zero.

animecyberratMarch 18, 2008

How about Star Fox Adventures 2, yes, no, maybe?

I think we'll get an F-Zero, but I think it will be for the DS. It's one of the few Nintendo franchises that hasn't made its way there yet.

It's not stupid, but it is hard. I've had it for a year and I'm up to the 4th level. The thing is that to make a modern game out of it it would have to be so different that it doesn't matter what the original game was like. I think the basic concept and setting have a lot of potential.

Now that HD-DVD is the loser you think Nintendo will contract Toshiba to provide HD-DVD drives for the next-generation Nintendo box?

If everyone's stuck with Blah-Ray a couple years from now, wouldn't HD-DVD be less convenient to pirate?

You know what is even harder to pirate? Cartridges

BranDonk KongMarch 19, 2008

To an extent - that's true. But people have always taken advantage of the serial port that Nintendo used to have in all their systems, to allow people to play games off of a CD-ROM or Zip drive and whatnot.

Edit - also, take a look at the DS and GBA. They're cartridge based systems, and are only second to the Dreamcast when it comes to "ease of piracy".

Combating piracy is just a waste of time and money. No system is fool proof.

The PSP says otherwise. Look at games like Wipeout Pure, which sold dismally and there are torrents to download it that have been accessed significantly more (like one torrent 6 times more) than actual sales.

Yes, only a small percentage of those torrent downloads would likely buy the game, but it can no longer be argued that piracy is something that companies should ignore due to lack of real finical downturn. The PSP is a living testament to how much impact piracy can have in the industry.

ThePermMarch 20, 2008

yeah on campus is 60 cents to buy a soda, i often have 50 cents, but not 60. I try to put in a dollar, but they want exact change. Looks like the soda machines not getting enough buyers to have exact change. You would think withe everyone having to put in that extra 10 cents there would be plenty of dimes in there.

It's a $1.90 here for a 20oz Mountain Dew. How ridiculous is that? In jackpot it was $1.19 and there was no sales tax. I wanna move back to NV.

Kid Icarus is the perfect franchise to get revived. Nintendo can try something completely new, with the obvious flying mechanics that the wii has been asking since it was created, and it can have a franchise name to get behind it. The first game was average, but it has enough cult status to let the new game get hype, something that I'm sure is the reason behind Nintendo's stuborn and stupid reluctancy to create new IPs without "training" or "play" in the title.

In short words, it would be a more of a new franchise than an old one, and I doubt it would have anything to do with the first kid Icarus gameplay-wise. There's not a lot to mantain anyway. Any game with a flying angel would pass as a 3D Kid Icarus, the franchise is no Metroid.
