Halo DS Footage Surfaces

In a related story, pigs have been seen flying all over California.

Haters be damned! IGN's Matt Cassmassina has, for some time, claimed that a DS version of Halo was in development at one point. Unfortunately, concrete evidence has eluded the general public. Until now, that is. On Cassamassina's blog, there are three videos, showing off the game's dual-wielding, multiplayer matches, and more.

Though he's quick to point out that the game was cancelled and that everything shown is from an early build, it finally puts the argument to rest as to whether or not the game was ever being considered.

Talkback

GoldenPhoenixOctober 02, 2007

Maybe the Matt haters will shut up now who questioned his credibility on this! (probably not though).

He's got a long way to go before he reclaims his credibility. Some of us remember he's been doing this for years.

But for reasons we won't discuss, Halo DS was never released.

There were some very big names involved with this title, so it's a shame you won't get to play it.

Yeah, yeah, NDAs on dead projects are so hard to get around, oh wait he's got some footage.

Again, he doesn't give the full picture. He just wants to be right.

Oh, awesome! Great news! I did not really doubt Matt since he is a Nintendo fanboy and he is right... most of the time. I still have doubts since he did what he do on IGN for quite some time.

It is too bad this got canceled looked pretty good for a DS game, even better then Hunters!

A game with nothing but video footage of bread in a toaster would likely be a better game then Hunters, so I would hope Halo DS had higher aspirations then that when it wasn't dead.

I would've loved to see what Bungie (if they were in fact the ones behind the game) could do on the DS. And hey, with all these rumors of them splitting from Microsoft, maybe we will!

Personally I would love it more if they went back to the RTS genre, they had a magic touch of sorts by creating a fun RTS game that had strategy but no resource management without seeming too basic.

It's not hard to be better than Hunters.

That is sad but oh so true.

that Baby guyOctober 02, 2007

It's not like too many are trying to be better than Hunters, in this market, though.

Your point was that things have changed. My point is that he's cried wolf more times than I care to remember.

But feel free to support him. I stopped reading IGN before the Cube came out.

Care to shed any light on times where he has lied, that you can actually prove? To question someone's integrity requires some proof. Regardless I do know people's hatred of Matt is quite petty, and frankly pretty sad. I don't know any online editor or even magazine editor that I really dislike, I may disagree with a lot of them but I wouldn't question their integrity because frankly I don't know them.

EnnerOctober 02, 2007

That looked slicker then I expected. The music adaption isn't too shabby either. I hope at least the engine is recycled.

Don't put words in my mouth. I haven't called him a liar. I've seen a long history of him making claims without substance (he seems to be a lightning rod for this sort of thing) that you just tune out. And when it comes out that he may be right (i'll believe it once a developer puts his hands up and says its his handiwork - until then all he has is his claims) then you expect me to care?

Read up on the story of the "Boy Who Cried Wolf" before you attack me next.

If I were to go back through the history of the podcasts, then I'd be able to cherry-pick a lot of these references (I remember a recent claim was that a Kirby Wii game was to be shown at E3 - Matt was the only one to speak about it anywhere - and it was a non-event).

I'm not trawling through podasts to prove a point - if the transcripts were available it would be a trivial task.
His site has a vested interest in generating web traffic. I struggle to care about what he has to say.

If that makes me a bad person then I'll take that on the chin.

IGN - desperate for publicity.

This is as digsuting as the HTLOZ triforce scam of 2000.

ShyGuyOctober 03, 2007

Sheesh, it's real, you were wrong, you can still hate him.

Did Matt Cassamassina take a leak on Australia or something? And will Rawmeat Cowboy ever surpass Matt as the internet's most hated Nintendo fan?

ThePermOctober 03, 2007

hmm, got cancelled...i'll have to talk to get back to the person i think was working on it.

all he said was that its a "big" fps for ds. On the other hand the engine resembles
http://www.gamespot.com/ds/action/goldeneye/review.html?sid=6127727&om_act=convert&om_clk=gsupdates&tag=updates;title;1

however I 20 questioned him, but i didn't get a definite answer.

perhaps the company was making it without Bungie/Microsofts permission and then tried to sell them on it. Also if anyone remembers when Hunters was announced those at Retro were a little suprised NTS was making it. They apparently werent aware of it until it got announced.

also whoever was working on it should turn it into a Halo Clone, and call it circular light

BlkPaladinOctober 03, 2007

Well take this with a grian of salt but I just heard a rumor about Halo Wars coming to the DS. I went to Gamestop to make several reservation and I was treated to a side show. Both the Microsoft Rep and Nintendo Rep were in the store at the same time so there was some playful fanboyish banter between the two, the only thing the two could agree on it was too bad the Sony Rep wasn't there so they could rip on him. But the topic of Microsoft game coming to DS was brought up. Blue Dragon, Viva Pinata were brought up, and this was mentioned along with the possiblity that Halo Wars might make it the DS. Another rumor that I disregaurded even though it came from the Microsoft Rep was that someone was working on a DS/360 conntectivity for games. But as I said take it with a grain of salt it was two Reps who loved their jobs a little too much.

ThePermOctober 03, 2007

lol and now the wikipedia article got updated saying
"A popular theory is that Halo DS is in some way based on the Nintendo DS game GoldenEye: Rogue Agent. This may mean that Halo DS is just a modified version of GoldenEye, although the purpose of such a mod is unknown. It is also possible that Halo DS was being developed by Electronic Arts (publisher of GoldenEye: Rogue Agent) and that the GoldenEye engine was being used as the basis for Halo DS (using modified versions of existing 3D engines is a common practice in video game development)."

which is funny because i didn't make that update

GoldenPhoenixOctober 03, 2007

I would much rather someone give me rumors they have heard, then keep them to themselves. Matt is close to alot of sources, and while some of which may not turn out to be true, I still give him far more credibility than others. For example, your example of Kirby, perhaps Nintendo was planning on showing it, but for whatever reason it was pulled, Nintendo has done things like that in the past, you can't blame Matt for at least letting that tidbit out to the public. Everything I've heard him say in his podcasts, he usually says it is a rumor or something that he heard, some turn out to be true some don't. It is like GoNintendo, while I despise the culture of people there, Rawmeat I do respect because he isn't afraid to let out rumors, some of which have been true. If I remember correctly, Halo DS was something that Matt said clearly that he was sure was in development, so people not believe him in turn is attacking his integrity no matter how you want to spin it. When you don't believe someone who says something with certainty, that is saying they are being dishonest.

SvevanEvan Burchfield, Staff AlumnusOctober 03, 2007

This is a fine discussion that I endorse. I would, however, like to move it to a new thread, dedicated entirely to CassMass. Discussions of Halo DS can stay here.

GoldenPhoenixOctober 03, 2007

I rewatched the footage of that Halo DS game, especially Matt playing it, it looked like it could have been ::gasp:: a fun FPS for DS.
