Retro Studios Taking a Break From Metroid

With the Prime trilogy complete, what's next for the Austin-based developer?

Though Retro Studios had some other projects in mind during the early days of the GameCube, ultimately, they were destined to only release Metroid titles. Now that the third iteration of the Prime subseries has been released, however, are they leaving Samus behind?

According to a video interview with Yahoo! Games, at least for a little while. Prime 3's Director, Mark Pacini, thinks that there'll definitely be more games in the series, but as far as Retro is concerned, they're "taking a break."

There are currently no details on what the company is working on next, whether it be on Wii or DS, but considering their past efforts, it should definitely be something worth looking at.

Thanks to lancubap at NeoGAF for the heads up!

Good. As much as I like the Metroid Prime series, three is enough and I'm really looking forward to something brand-new from Retro.

In fact, I'm hoping we get a break from Metroid until the next-gen. (Not including the possibility of Dread or some other 2D DS incarnation).

I wonder what Retro would like to do... hmm...

UltimatePartyBearAugust 30, 2007

They might have some desire to return to a canceled project, although I'd fear it would get a little too Too Human after so long. Maybe they should take the Prime engine and make that Halo killer so many people wanted Corruption to be.

GoldenPhoenixAugust 30, 2007

Can't wait to see what Retro can do without being constrained by the MP license. We could be seeing some great things from them.

Ian SaneAugust 30, 2007

I think this is great. They're so talented that I want to see what else they can do. Meanwhile Metroid can go back to being a "one per console" series like it used to be now that it's an established franchise again. There isn't really any need to have multiple Metroid games (real Metroid games) on one console anyway. For now the only other Metroid I want to see if a 2D one for the DS.

I like it when a developer has a good enough reputation that they themselves become the franchise. When Rare was with Nintendo I was always waiting for the next Rare game. I'm always looking for the next Blizzard or Treasure game. Square had that kind of rep in the past as well. I'd like Retro to become that kind of company.

Can it be? I agree with EVERYTHING Ian has said!

PlugabugzAugust 30, 2007

They said as much back from when Echoes was released. I hope they just continue to use and develop the Prime engine.

Now if Nintendo would hurry up and get Monster Games onto that Burnout-killer....

matt ozAugust 30, 2007

Great.

I hate the Metroid Prime series.

There, I said it.

I'm glad they'll finally be able to work on an original game. They seem to be talented, though I haven't particularly enjoyed their games.

Fixed.

Agreed. I hope they can pursue something really fulfilling for their next project... even if its Wii Sports 2.

GoldenPhoenixAugust 30, 2007

I think NIntendo should tell Retro "Hey guys thanks for the Metroid Prime series, now whatever you feel like doing go for it, we will be here to advise you if you need it".

Ian SaneAugust 30, 2007

"I'd much rather see people release good 2D games for the main consoles instead of assuming they can only survive on handhelds. Some genres ONLY work in 2D and there's no reason not to take them to their graphical limits on a real system."

Well now that you bring that up, yes, that is what I would like too but I just know it isn't going to happen. Better to get a new 2D Metroid on the DS than no new 2D Metroid at all. It is frustrating that 2D game design has hit a self-imposed wall.

NinGurl69 *hugglesAugust 30, 2007

Gyromite Prime, confirmed.

MashiroAugust 30, 2007

I want to see the next metroid game have no form of infection involed.

Please Nintendo, enough with the whole "samus gets *insert infection here* in her system and . . ." scenarios.

Bill AurionAugust 30, 2007

Because, you know, two games is a whole lot! =)

My dream is a FPS set in Medieval times, but with a focus on exploration and puzzles like the Prime series is known for...

ShyGuyAugust 30, 2007

Yeast.

Okay, that was crass.

Retro should go back to one of the IPs they were working on before Prime.

Well the worst part about it is that Samus usually gains a ugly design because of it face-icon-small-wink.gif

For shame! I, for one, want all the Metroid I can get my hands on, thankyouverymuch. I don't have a problem with letting Retro do something else after three Metroid games, but saying there's "no need" for more Metroid? Nonsense!

TrueNerdAugust 30, 2007

I'd like to see the franchise go in a new direction next time it makes an appearance. The 3D ones at least. But yeah, let's hope Dread is real.

AManatee2August 30, 2007

Maybe I didn't read all the posts, and thusly I shall be laughed at, but I really want them to do a great FPS for Wii with some online play and with enough options for endless scenarios. I'm not sure why, and with that you might agree with me, but during the grieving process of watching Rare leave and break into other stuff, I kind of saw Retro as a company to pick up the torch after never seeing a real sequel to Perfect Dark.

You could always play the Timesplitters games =) and rumor has it TS4 may be headin' to various consoles including Wii in the future. ::crosses fingers::.

If only the TS games were any good, I may care. face-icon-small-tongue.gif

Major MP3 spoiler:

I think a BSM should get their own game! All the NPCs would want to chat with him but he'd just act busy at his desk job through the whole game, depending on his busy meter.

Future Perfect was good =P

Raven Blade. That's what I hope.

I don't care, just make it good!

Or Raven Blade.

KDR_11kSeptember 01, 2007

I don't think resurrecting Kid Icarus would be useful in any way. Almost none even played the original and few would even recognize the characters of the game. What would be the point other than writing the words Kid Icarus on the box? There won't be anything resembling the old gameplay anyway.

I have an idea! New IP!

There was some game they were working on waaaaay back when...What was it called again? I remember it got canceled. Ehh, forget it. It must not have been too good if someone isn't posting it about every three posts or so.

Because it's a Ninty franchise I think that could be expanded, just like Retro did to Metroid...However, that's not to say I think Retro should do Kid Icarus (because it shouldn't be first-person... =3)

GoldenPhoenixSeptember 01, 2007

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Retro made up of people who made the first HalfLife or something like that? If so then they probably should stick to FPS because that is more than likely their expertise.

Bill AurionSeptember 01, 2007

Plus they have an amazing control scheme that really shouldn't go to waste!

It's not even a franchise, it's a random game. The question is less what would be expanded and more what would be kept? I don't think a 3d KI game would have anything in common with the original game except maybe for a few iconic characters.

Bill AurionSeptember 02, 2007

"It's not even a franchise, it's a random game."

There are TWO games... face-icon-small-mad.gif

mantidorSeptember 02, 2007

I want a flying/adventure game. If they use the Kid Icarus name to get some extra points among the old school crowd is fine with me.

I also wouldn't mind if they get on a new IP, I always wanted to see how Raven Blade would turn out.
