With the announcement of the release details it is time for you to send us all your 3DS questions.

Now that Nintendo has finally told us their plans for 3DS, it seems like a good time to clarify any questions about the upcoming handheld. We are in the business of providing you, our readers, the information you desire. To that end, we're doing a special Nintendo World Report Mailbag devoted entirely to your 3DS questions.

Feel free to ask about launch details, hardware questions, upcoming titles, announcements, hands-on experiences, or anything else you're curious about.

So, if you've got a burning question about the 3D handheld go ahead and send it to us. Be sure to include your name and where you're from. Try to get your question in by the end of the weekend to maximize your chances of it getting answered.

Note: This is for the Nintendo World Report mailbag, not the podcasts.

Talkback

I put this in the handheld discussion because it belongs here better than podcasts (weird that it went there, I know).

All you forum trolls send in your questions to the mailbag. I'll answer them in an upcoming mailbag.

Can we just post them here and later on you can add a stamp or something and drop in in the mailbox for us?

My only Question is will you be asking these questions to Nintendo or will you be answering these questions from your own experience with the 3DS?

Both. And additional research as needed.

Will the 3DS eshop have non-game apps?

vuduFebruary 08, 2011

Are DS games played on the 3DS controlled using the circle pad, D-pad or either?

Can 3DSWare games run off the SD card or do they need to saved to the system's internal memory?

MaryJaneFebruary 08, 2011

Is there Wii connectivity?

How much internal storage?

Will 3rd parties be releasing AR cards, or will those come only from Nintendo? And how often can we expect new cards pack to come out and at what price?

What kind of additional support is the 3DS going to get in terms of media, and features for ballparks, restaurants, grocery stores, etc.?

Is it possible for the viewing angles on the 3DS screen to improve on the system redesign? Or improved through headtracking?

Not exactly a 3DS question, but if you're going to ask a Nintendo rep; what does Nintendo think of Sony's rear trackpad, and the PSP2 in general?

Selfish question, but I'm hoping to pick up Samurai Warriors and Tom Clancy's GR: Shadow Wars at launch, has anyone from NWR had hands on time with those games? I didn't see them among the previews is the Talkback section.

When is NWR getting it's review unit, and launch games? And, when can we expect full impressions/reviews?

How heavy is the 3DS?

BlackNMild2k1February 08, 2011

Also, how much RAM is this thing packing?

It's rumored to be 64MB from IGN but 96MB from hardware leaks. Are either of these true, and if so, which one.

When will this Mailbag's answers be posted?

that's a good question, I've been wondering that myself. It seems that it would have come out by now, it's been over half a month.

TurdFurgyMarch 11, 2011

I didn't miss the answers did I?

BlackNMild2k1March 12, 2011

you did. they posted them in reply #9.5.....

you just missed it. Maybe next time though ;D

but in all seriousness, I haven't seen anything posted about a mailbag. I'm guessing that either there weren't enough questions submitted (because the forums already know all there is to know)
or NWR is still looking for someone to read through, organize and actually take the time to respond to the overstuffed @NWR mailbox.

MaryJaneMarch 12, 2011

The forum knows all there is to know?

Only two of my questions have been answered by reviewers of the Japanese launch.

That is my excuse as to why there wouldn't be enough questions submitted for them to do a mailbag yet.

If you asked the forum, I'm sure you could get an answer. There is not much about the 3DS that isn't posted all over the internet and right here on NWR, whether it's from the staff (hands-on, launch exp.) or the forums (tech. details, rumors, news).

Not to step on the mailbag's toes or anything, but it was supposed to come out about 4-5 weeks ago.

Friend Code Game Access and Availability System Controls

Does the New Nintendo 3DS One Friend Code System have Game/User Access and Availability Controls?

Does the Friend Menu in the Nintendo 3DS system firmware provide options that allow you to control, organize and choose which of your games will be accessible to particular Friends?

For example, let’s say that I have the games Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, Resident Evil: Mercenaries, and Animal Crossing 3DS, and I would like to play online with the users Brother, Friend, and Acquaintance.

I want to be able to play all three of my games online with Brother; I want to play Street Fighter and Mercenaries with Friend, but I do not trust him to be in my town in Animal Crossing; I want to play Street Fighter online with Acquaintance, but I don’t want to play co-op with him in Mercenaries or Animal Crossing.

Using the old Wii and DS/DSi Friend Code System, I would give my Codes from all three games to Brother, and I would receive all three of his Codes. Then, I would give only two of my Codes, the one for Street Fighter and the one for Mercenaries, to Friend, and I would receive those two Codes from him. Finally, I would swap Codes for only Street Fighter with Acquaintance.

Using the new 3DS Friend Code System, I would give my Code to each of the other three users, Brother, Friend, and Acquaintance, and I would receive each of their Codes. Then, can I go to the menu in the Nintendo 3DS firmware and organize the settings so that Brother has access to all three games, Friend sees only Street Fighter and Mercenaries, and Acquaintance can only see that I have Street Fighter?

Does the 3DS Friend Code System also allow for more customization and allow me to change these settings as I see fit? Would I no longer be stuck with someone having a Friend Code for my game where I no longer want to play online with that person? For example, if I no longer wanted to play Street Fighter with Acquaintance, could I hide the game from his view so that he can no longer see that I have the game, or so he can no longer see when I am online? Or, if I don’t want to play Mercenaries with Friend anymore, can I hide that game from his view. Would it also allow me to add games to users as well? For Example, if I wanted to play Mercenaries with Acquaintance can I make it available for him to see that I have it just by changing my previous settings? Or, if I wanted to play Animal Crossing with Friend can I make that game available to him, all without having to provide or retrieve more Friend Codes? Finally, does the 3DS Friend Code System allow multiple users to login to a single Nintendo 3DS system with each of their configurations saved for them (Think of a single system household with multiple Nintendo 3DS users).

I hope that this has been explained clearly enough. I hope that this is how the new system works. As inconvenient as it has been to use Friend Codes for the Wii and DS/DSi, at least it functionally kept Friend and Acquaintance out of my Animal Crossing town. I would not prefer a system that allows anyone with my Friend Code to connect to any of my games or even show them which games I own without restrictions. As long as there is a way for me to control, set up, and organize which of my games are available to which Friends, then I’m good. That is why I have not been too upset with the old system. However, I believe that this can be done in the firmware instead of through the use of separate Friend Codes per game. With the Nintendo 3DS, I hope that they are taking this opportunity to improve the efficiency and convenience of an already functionally effective system, rather than replacing the system altogether with one that offers less access control. Thank you.
