Your Questions Answered

It's the last mailbag before Nintendo's E3 press conference!

Hey there, folks, and welcome to a brand new iteration of the Monday Morning Mailbag. As you'll remember, I skipped a post a couple of weeks ago, so to avoid breaking schedule, there's a new article today. I'm also betting that the next few mailbags are gonna be chock-full of questions related to E3, so it's a good time to get rid of the inventory.

Anywho, let's do it to it!

In between bouts of wondering if it's love that you're after, Mistah Mistah is curious:

Last year, I picked up Twilight Princess for the Wii, my first Zelda game. While it was only my first taste in the series, I fell in love with it, and went on to play more. I played Phantom Hourglass, and didn't really like it too much because of the Temple of the Ocean King, and then went on to play the original after remembering I had an old NES with the original game that was handed down to me when I was younger from an older cousin. So now I'm done with that, and I was wondering what is the next game? I was thinking Ocarina of Time or The Wind Waker, but I'm not sure. Thanks.

Well, Mistah, Twilight Princess probably borrows most of its tone and layout from Ocarina of Time, so if that's what you're after, you can't go wrong there. Personally, my favorite Zelda is Wind Waker since, aside from a few frustrating bits here and there, it completely nails the sense of exploration and wonder that a Zelda game should evoke.

Majora's Mask is a great diversion from the classic Zelda formula, and RFN Host Jonny Metts would probably say that Majora's and Twilight actually have a lot in common. Oh, and there's obviously A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening and Minish Cap - since you enjoyed the original game, there's no doubt you'll dig those three, as well.

What I'm getting at here, Mistah, is that just about all of the Zelda games are worth trying. I haven't played the Oracle of Ages/Seasons games, but I can't imagine they're not at least decent. If I absolutely had to pick a playing order, I suppose I'd recommend the following:

3D Zeldas:

1. Ocarina of Time

2. Wind Waker

3. Majora's Mask

2D Zeldas:

1. Link's Awakening (DX Version if possible)

2. A Link to the Past

3. Minish Cap

4. Oracle of Ages/Seasons

But really, play them in whatever order you'd like. Despite what the internet may have told you, Nintendo has no over-arching storyline (aside from Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass) - there are a few little call-backs here and there, but they're largely irrelevant and almost completely unnecessary. Just enjoy them!

J-Dizzo wants to start some straight up beef, apparently, yo:

Why does the mailbag suck so much?  It's nearly unreadable.  I've been coming to this site since 2000ish and the mailbag used to be something that I looked forward to and now it just has terrible childish jokes.  I really can't even stand to read it. whats the deal?

You know, J-Dizzo, I could point out the obvious irony in someone who refers to themselves as J-Dizzo calling anyone out for being childish. I could also point out that the internet is not serious business, that we're all just trying to have a bit of fun, and that if you're not a fan, you're more than welcome to simply not read it. Indeed, I could make all of those points. Instead, though, I made this:

Now who's being childish?

kytim89 should know that there's no such thing as a dumb question:

This sounds like a dumb question, but could the wii or its successor (wii 2) properly emulate the Dreamcast on the virtual console?

It's most definitely possible. Through the wonders of software emulation, provided the hardware is at least as powerful as the architecture the software was developed for, you're good to go. And since SEGA's been supportive of Virtual Console, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Dreamcast games on the Wii 2/HD/Power Cosmic.

Having said that, I doubt we'd see games like Samba de Amigo or Typing of the Dead make an appearance, as they were developed with accessories in mind. It's a shame, too, because Typing of the Dead was awesome.

Captain N from Brooklyn is back again this week, proving that all you need to do to get published is to send an email that's easy to answer:

What Nintendo series "character" would you like to see first on the Nintendo 3DS?

Oooh! I like this question.

It's a bit difficult to give an answer based on what little information we have on the 3DS at the moment (ask me again in two weeks!), but if we're to assume that the system's going to be a DS with a 3D-capable screen, I'd really love to see Q-Games develop a new Star Fox. Zipping through space and getting a great sense of depth of field would be amazing, and we already know Q has the chops after Star Fox: Command.

The other (and much more obvious) answer is Mario. With every new hardware release, Nintendo's usually got some sort of Mario game to show off its strengths. Sometimes it's awesome (Galaxy) and sometimes it's not as awesome (64 DS), but you can pretty much always count on it. Get EAD Tokyo on it, Nintendo!

Shaymin is ashamed:

I have a confession to make - I will make sure to buy Nintendo games new solely for the Club Nintendo points and the off chance that I'll get something good out of the reward.

I don't have the same issues with 3rd party games and often end up buying them used because I've got no other incentive to buy them new.

Are there any other 3rd parties that run a Club Nintendo service?

Unfortunately, no. If you read the FAQ for Nintendo of America's Club Nintendo loyalty program, you'll see the following:

Only games published by Nintendo come packaged with the PIN used to register the game.

Games not published by Nintendo (licensee games) will not include a PIN card and cannot be registered.

Honestly, though, wouldn't you save a ton of money by just buying games you were actually interested in, and then using those savings to just buy Club Nintendo nicknacks on eBay or what have you?

...and that wraps us up for another edition of the Monday Morning Mailbag. Thanks for reading, guys, and be sure to check out the Talkback thread and feed the bag. See ya in two weeks!
