Just Shapes and Beats is a mesmerizing rhythm game with an exceedingly simple idea. You control a shape. Music plays and is represented by colorful beats. Avoid them. Don’t die. That’s it. That’s all you have to know.

Add in three friends, and Just Shapes and Beats starts reminding me of late night Rock Band jam sessions, except instead of playing notes to a predefined patterns, we’re moving around using an analog stick to avoid brutal bass drops and pulsating rhythms. Once again: it’s simple. Just avoid the beats. Don’t die. That’s it. That’s all you have to know.

We played four songs in the demo, all thumping techno tracks. Just Shapes and Beats seems to have huge soundtrack, and we did get confirmation that the Mortal Kombat techno track will be included. The multiplayer seems best on a couch. That’s how the Nintendo World Report team played, and it was an absolute blast. The co-op can also be taken online, which will probably still be fun - although when on the same couch you can frantically yell at each other to avoid the beats. And don’t die. That’s it. Bullet-hell rhythm game is what this game’s genre seems to be. It gets very challenging, but if you have friends playing with you, all you have to do is limp from checkpoint to checkpoint, which are amply spaced in the songs.
