Star Wars Ep. III: Revenge of the Sith (GBA)

by Bonnie Ruberg - April 15, 2005, 1:32 pm EDT

Facing droids, droids, and more droids in a new, straightforward side-scroller.

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith is a relatively enjoyable game, though it does still have some kinks to work out of its system. Like previous Star Wars games, this side-scroller sticks close to the events of the movie. It also offers players a chance to step into the action as either Anakin or Obi-wan, who, though initially completing identical missions, soon wind up on divergent paths.

The graphics are clear and well-executed. Sprites and backgrounds, while not stunning, are certainly respectable. However, the characters’ avatars, which pop up during dialogue scenes, are something of an eyesore. Not that they’re all that poorly rendered, but the over-exaggerated emotions on the faces of Anakin and Obi-Wan are somewhat ridiculous. The backgrounds - for the most part aesthetically unoffensive - often repeat to the point of similar absurdity. A few more variations in scenery accessories might help the game feel better-rounded as a whole. In contrast, the game’s menus are varied, interesting and visually appealing. The game’s sound, highly-derivative of the movies’ soundtracks, is at the least pleasant and appropriate to the gaming environment.

Despite a variety of attacks available to both Anakin and Obi-Wan, gameplay is rather straightforward. Killing off a constant onslaught of droids, while fun, can become repetitive. The fighting itself is intuitive and easy to master, though at times there's a detrimental lag time as your character attempts to catch up with your hurried commands. Boss fights, mostly held with human characters, provide opportunities to try out different styles of fighting. But these too are sometimes less than satisfying; methods of attack can be counter-intuitive and making it through a battle may prove to be more annoying than challenging.

Episode III (at least in its current stage of development) also has some problems with the fluidity of the side-scrolling format. Often, the screen doesn’t move consistently with the character. More frustratingly, you usually need to walk all the way to the right-hand side of the screen, right up to the waiting barrier, in order to trigger the release of enemies, who will then appear directly on top of you.

Overall, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith looks to be a solid, if generally unimpressive, title. Basic gameplay is easily comprehendible and often fun. Certain bosses, particularly those who test your Jedi skills, can be exciting and rewarding. The ability to play the game as both Anakin and Obi-Wan offers replay value and the chance to check out both sides of the plot. If you like side-scrollers in the tradition of Double Dragon, this game promises to be enjoyably simple, even if you’re not a Star Wars fan.
