Trick Star

by Chris Martino - May 14, 2004, 1:59 pm EDT

Trick Star is a unique racing game with a robust freestyle component.

The version I played at E3 had most, if not all, of the features that will be included in the final game. You choose from three different riders, each with their own slightly different abilities and enter one of the three racing leagues. You'll be racing on motorized unicycles that basically look like someone put handle bars on the back wheel of a race bike. Each league has a specific cycle associated with it allowing you to do crazier tricks as you progress through the game. I only had a chance to play the beginner league which comes with a standard cycle, but even so, the game is a lot of fun.

You'll be racing against seven other cyclists around tracks with twists, turns and, of course, jumps. The track is elevated and has a railing on it so you don't fall off, but if you hit a jump at the wrong angle you'll shoot into the air. The cycles are highly mobile allowing you to take sharp turns fairly easily by just letting of the gas. Should you want to waste some time you can even do tight, little donuts. As you race around the track you'll fly off several jumps. While in the air you can pull off tons of tricks using the L button and a direction, and you can link tricks into one another. If you don't let up before you hit the ground, you'll wipe out. Tricks accomplish three things. First, they fill up your turbo meter during the race allowing you to boost ahead of the competition. Second, the points you earn can be used between races to purchase more tricks. And last but not least, they're just plain fun to do. There are also power ups to collect during the race, such as slow motion. This slows everything down while you're in the air making is possible to link many tricks together and fill your boost meter very quickly. The AI cycles are pretty tough to beat so you'll have to be on top of your game if you want to win.

Since there are over 40 stunts to do, there is also a trick-only mode so you can hone your skills. This basically is just a suspended animation of your cycle in the air, which lets you try out different things without penalty. Theres a listing of how to do all your tricks, and even which tricks can be linked together. The riders trick animations are superb, as are the the not so pleasant crashing and falling animations. The graphics are quite good, accurately conveying a great sense of speed without feeling uncontrolable. Obviously taking a cue from Top Gear Rally, weather also plays a part in the game. As I raced along, I saw the sky gradually darken and rain began to slowly build momentum. When it started really coming down puddles appeared on the track making the cycle harder to control.

With three different leagues containing over a dozen races each, 16 distinct tracks and a whole lot of tricks, Trick Star is a title well worth keeping an eye on.
