Mario Party 4

by Karlie Yeung - August 15, 2002, 1:54 pm EDT

The series is still going and with more mini games than ever. There might actually be slightly more major changes this time.

This was only available to play as one player, which really didn’t show off the game to a great extent. The board available to play was based on a theme park. Travelling around the board were obstacles, such as roller coasters and roundabouts, that choose the next direction to move to. The character models looked better than in N64 versions of the game and there was a lot more activity on the board. Otherwise, everything looked all too familiar.

Mini-games I tried include Crazy Free Throw, where each player has to aim basketballs at three rows of moving baskets. Jumping before throwing aims the basketballs higher, and the balls remaining in the baskets until the end of the game so scouting for empty baskets is important for scoring. In Hop, Skip, Stamp, each player is stood onto a square stamp block and can hop across a page of a colouring book. The player at the end with the most coverage of their colour is the winner and it is possible to stamp over colours already printed.

Hopefully there will be enough new ideas to revive the series, it should turn out to be worth a try if all the mini games are as new as the ones shown. It’s a pity that the control stick rotating type games are not included any more, as Cast Away was my favourite mini game.
