Guilty Gear X Advance Edition

by Joe Fletcher - August 24, 2001, 6:17 am EDT

Surprise! One of the greatest DC fighters to never make it to the US heads to GBA.

Upon hearing that GGX was to be shown at Spaceworld, I was a bit apprehensive. A game that pushed the animation power of the DC hardware couldn't possibly be playable on a GBA, right? Well...

The graphics are a bit more blocky, naturally. But everything is still definitely viewable. The characters are still impressive, even on a small screen. The animation as well is also fairly smooth, but some of the frames seem to be missing. Whether this is because of the completion %, or because of lack of power is hard to say.

The music was absolutely amazing, sounding pretty much exactly like the Dreamcast version. All the hard rocking classical metal style music is all there. And it seemed to have all the instruments included from the original. Score another mark for the GBA sound system.

The gameplay itself was pretty good overall. The hit detection was a bit off, as was the input response, but not enough to make for anything approaching an unplayable experience. The moves were all in there for the characters that are completed thus far, and were all animated well.

All in all, a game to wait for with baited breath in the US.
