Super Street Fighter II Turbo: Revival

by Ty Shughart - May 18, 2001, 4:21 pm EDT

This is what I played while the SRK gang was all over the arcade machines. :\

Super SF2 Turbo - the 4th incarnation of the original definitive fighting game - is now handheld and complete-looking in Super Street Fighter II Turbo Revival.

For those of you who only had a SNES, Super Turbo features super moves and a 'new' character, Cheater Akuma, or Gouki. Super moves work with a power bar that builds as you fight, and you can activate it when it's full.

There's no sign of Akuma here or in any screens I've seen, but Omni at SRK told me he's there. Good enough.

The animation is sharp and complete - there's a couple new effects, too. When you hit, a star effect appears where you hit, and scales out quickly. When you activate a super, an 'X' outline appears on the screen, and if you win a round with a super, a full screen effect flashes. It appears to be polygonal.

Theres' been some changes to a few of the character's stages. Sometimes it's just a little change, but in a couple cases, it's been totally changed. Chun Li has her SF Alpha 2 stage, and Guile has a new stage with a hovering jump jet in the background. (No, it's not SFA2 Charlie's)

Performing all six basic attacks depends on pressing the A and B buttons for different lengths of time. This seems weird to me, and I'd prefer the CVS style of dealing with four buttons. Maybe it can be changed in the options...
