New details have been released for Pokémon Sword and Shield in a trailer released today, which include a returning feature and an increase to a newly announced one.

New Pokémon:

  • First revealed at E3, the Electric-typed puppy Yamper made his trailer debut. Yamper's ability, Ball Fetch, allows for a missed Poké Ball to be returned to its trainer.
  • A new Fairy type named Alcremie was shown. Its body creates whipped cream and other sweet treats.
  • Rolycoly is a Rock-typed Pokémon designed to look like coal. It has a new ability called "Steam Engine", the nature of which is not available.
  • Duraludon is a Steel/Dragon Pokémon, with either the Light or Heavy Metal abilities that affect its weight. It tends to brawl with Tyranitar.

New Characters

Two gym leaders were shown: Fighting specialist Bea and Ghost specialist Allister. For the first time since Black and White, the games will have different leaders, as Bea is a Sword-exclusive leader and Allister is a Shield-exclusive: this is the first time ever that two games of a set will have different types of Gyms.

Chairman Rose and Oleana, the chairman of the Galar Pokémon League and his secretary, will have some role in the game.

Gigantamax

In addition to the Dynamax function, some Pokémon are capable of becoming even bigger through the process of Gigantamax. Along with the growth comes a full appearance change: Alcremie starts to resemble a multi-layer cake, while Corviknight's wing armor turn into their own birds and Drednaw becomes bipedal. Special "G-Max" moves will do massive damage and also affect the field.

Other Version Exclusives

In addition to the version exclusive gyms, two sets of Pokémon were revealed as version exclusives. Sword will get the Deino and Jangmo-o families, while Shield will get the Larvitar and Goomy families. A preorder bonus for the Dual Pack will include the ability to get Jangmo-o and Larvitar regardless of version via a Max Raid Battle.
