every time I double dip, it tends to be intentionally in support of the developers or... at the very least the rights holders to a game... or it just happens to be in a compilation I've gotten or such.
The only instance I can think of where this happened not for the specific reason of "I will buy Super Metroid in every form it comes out in." or "I feel kinda bad for getting Freedom Planet the first time on Steam Sale, I will get it again for Wii U on full price" is that I have 2 copies of Wind Waker on Gamecube. NO clue how it happened. maybe a friend left their copy over? I distinctly remember only purchasing that game once and then never beating it after being impressed by it's graphics and let down by it's gameplay.
The game I own the most repeat copies of is... well, it WAS Super Mario Bros., but now it's... probably Sonic 1. it MIGHT be SMB1.
It frightens me that I don't actually know this.
it also frightens me that for as many different ways I own Sonic 1, I know for a fact that it's not even half the friggin' ways Sega has re-released or repackaged that game.
At least with SMB1, I can go "Okay, I have a standalone SMB cart, a SMB/Duck Hunt/World Class Track Meet cart, Super Mario All-Stars, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, a Wii VC Copy, and a 3DS VC Copy. I'm really only missing the All-stars disc, a Wii U VC Copy, and maybe like... a GBA NES Classic series cart.
I'm really only missing out on SMB/Duck Hunt, NES World Championships, Super Mario All-Stars+ Super Mario WOrld, an action replay+Animal Crossing on Gamecube, and a play choice 10. aaand I guess that special 25th anniversary Wii with the special rom on it with a graphical edit"
With Sonic 1, I have all these alternate versions, but there's SO many more because of how hard Sega has shilled that game in compilations. You literally get a copy of Sonic 1 with every purchase of Sonic Generations, and I double dipped on that game for PC mods. There's a DS port. there's a (Legendarily Bad) GBA port. There's Sonic Jam on the Sega Saturn. there's the (Really good port done by the guys that are making Sonic Mania) iOS/Android version, there's the 3DS version by M2, there's Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, there's PS2/Xbox compilations of random Sega Games, there's Sonic Mega Collection, there's Wii VC, there's whatever horribly emulated versions they put on Xbox Live Arcade and PSN before they released Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, there's actually 2 seperate revisions on the original Genesis/Mega Drive Hardware that fixes some background scrolling bunk and adds a single ring to a route in Labyrinth Zone act 1 so you can potentially take the shortcut that skips most of the level but still get 50 rings for a special stage.
I'm probably missing... SOMETHING in there. those are just ports off the top of my head.
seriously, the Sonic 1 with every copy of Sonic Generations as an unlockable thing is almost as obnoxious as the Mario Bros. with every copy of a Super Mario Advance/Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga game.
TL/DR
Don't sweat buying Darksiders 2 twice, I've done far more egregious. I also may own Shovel Knight and a couple of the Shantae games at least 3 different ways...
Also, I kinda love the hot take on Starfy.
As for games that I got and I will never play? most of the time those tend to be games I want for the collection or games that someone else buys me. I have a copy of elite beat agents I just got. have NO intention of playing due to lack of stylus, but people talk it up and I wanna be able to be like "Yeah, I have that." when people ask.
