Japanese Weekly Software and Hardware Charts for Jan. 28-Feb. 3

The week Mario and friends smashed The Devil and made him cry.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=15251

 Incredibly, there were six new non-Nintendo entries this week - even one on the Xbox 360.  In fact, this week there are only three Nintendo games in the top ten, which is quite a change of pace from the norm.

Of course the front-runner was Nintendo’s hotly-anticipated mascot brawler Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which sold an astounding 820,000 copies in just three days. It will no doubt pass the one million mark next week, much faster than even Wii Fit.  It should also be noted that it sold precisely four times as many copies as the second-place PS3 version of Devil May Cry 4, one of the biggest releases on Sony’s platform this year.

Sales / Total Sales

01. [Wii] Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Nintendo) – 820,000 / (New Entry)
 02. [PS3] Devil May Cry 4 (Capcom) – 205,000 / (New Entry)
 03. [PS2] Tales of Destiny: Director’s Cut (Bandai-Namco) – 117,000 / (New Entry)
 04. [PS2] Haruhi Suzumiya’s Wonderment (Banpresto) – 114,000 / (New Entry)
 05. [Wii] Wii Fit (Nintendo) – 73,000 / 1,356,000)
 06. [PS3] Disgaea 3 (Nippon Ichi Software) – 55,000 / (New Entry)
 07. [360] Devil May Cry 4 (Capcom) – 40,000 / (New Entry)
 08. [NDS] Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games (Nintendo) – 34,000 / 175,000)
 09. [PS3] Assassin’s Creed (Ubisoft) – 28,000 / (New Entry)
 10. [PSP] World Soccer Winning Eleven (Konami) – 26,000 / 102,000)

The effects of Super Smash Bros. Brawl were also felt in hardware sales.  Wii sales rose to almost 100,000 for the week, beating out the DS and PSP with ease.

Weekly Hardware Sales

Wii - 94,473?
 PSP - 72,528?
 DS Lite - 67,472
 PS3 - 41,796
 PS2 - 12,115?
 Xbox 360 - 6,060

Nice! Good week for Sony, I mean, finally the top 10 isnt dominated by Nintendo. Heck, even the 360 has a spot!

Did Smash potentially eat up other Nintendo related game sales?

I keep forgetting how popular the Tales series is in Japan. Never expected the Tales of Destiny remake to place so high on the list even if it may only be a short time.

Japan ran out of people.
Carmine Red, Associate Editor

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

Wasn't Wii Fit heavily undersupplied?
